I’m Not the Doctor

Sing -There Is a Balm UMH 375

Let us pray.

Lord of mercy and grace. Creator of life. I praise you in all that you do. I pray that a mighty word is spoken here today. Give a word of hope and comfort to us all through these trying times. Let your words be my words be your words. Let the words of mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight dear Lord, my strength and my redeemer. In the name of Jesus Christ I pray, Amen.

Things have been kind of crazy lately. We have been subjected to crisis after crisis. (Pause) But as sure as there is God, there is hope. These are trying times in our lives, and we are going to have to put complete faith, hope, and trust in God.

There was a time in my life where all I did was question God. My questions were:

Why would God allow me to get a BS in chemistry and all these other degrees just to call me to be a preacher?

Why do I seem to suffer the more the try to do good?

Why do I always seem to get the short end of the stick?

What is it about me that make people feel they have the right to take advantage of me?

What is the advantage of being good when others return the favor by being evil?

Pause.

But one of mentors gave me answer that was life changing for me. She said, “Deena, when God created the world there was total chaos, and even in the chaos there was still order. From the chaos water, earth, and sky were created.”

And with all the things that this nation has gone through and what has happened with Ms. Virginia, (pause) I recognize how powerless we all are.

And with that in mind, this leads us to the title of today’s message, “I’m not the doctor”.

Pause.

I am a connoisseur of a variety of music. I like all kinds of music. And I hate to admit it, but I like country music too. But ya’ll better not let that leave this church because as an African American young-adult, I have an image to maintain.

But there is an artist that I love to listen to. She is an alternative rock musician, and her name is Alanis Morrisette. My favorite CD that has put out is called Jagged Little Pill. And my favorite song on this CD is “I’m Not the Doctor”.

And the lyrics go like this:

I don’t want to b the filler if the void is solely yours.

I don’t want to be your glass of single malt whiskey,

Hidden in the bottom drawer.

I don’t want to be the bandage if the wound is not mine.

Lend me some fresh air.

I don’t want to be adored for what I merely represent to you.

I don’t want to be your babysitter,

You’re a very big boy now.

I don’t want to be your mother I didn’t care you in my wound for 9 months

Show me the back door.

Visiting hours are 9 to 5 and I show up at half past six

Well I already know that you’d find some way to sneak me in and

Oh, mind the empty bottles with the holes along the bottom

You see, it’s too much to ask for and I’m not the doctor.

I don’t want to be sweeper of the eggshells that you walk upon.

I don’t want to be your other half; I believe that 1 and 1 make 2.

I don’t want be your food or the light from the fridge on face at midnight.

Hey! What are you hungry for?

I don’t want to be the glue that holds your pieces together.

I don’t want to be your idol,

See this pedestal is high and I’m afraid of height.

I don’t want to be lived through a vicarious occasion please

Open the window!

I don’t want to live on someday when mottos is last week.

I don’t want to be responsible for your fractured heart and its wounded beat

I don’t want to be a substitute for the smoke you’ve been inhaling.

What do you thank me…?

What do you thank me for?

Visiting hours are 9 to 5 and I show up at half past six

Well I already know that you’d find some way to sneak me in and

Oh, mind the empty bottles with the holes along the bottom

You see, it’s too much to ask for and I’m not the doctor.

Pause.

Alanis is right. I’m not the doctor. I’m not the one who can control what goes on even in my own life.

I’m NOT all knowing.
