Romans Study Series

Romans 3:10-19

Paul begins this section of the Book of Romans with an indictment against all of mankind that is based upon three main points. In this discourse Paul proves the point that there is not one righteous man in all of creation who can stand before God innocent unless their sin has been washed away and covered by the Blood of Jesus Christ.

A few days ago I attended the revival at Live Oak PCG in Watson, LA where Rev. Dwain Mixon is preaching. In that sermon, Bro. Mixon was talking about the fact that we don’t have absolutes in our lives any longer. I want to tell you that there is one real absolute and Paul is presenting it to us right now. It is absolutely true that not one man on the face of God’s green earth is righteous before God. God’s righteousness is perfect and no man can claim that he has obeyed every law and attained unto God’s righteous state of his own volition.

Romans 3:10-18, "As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. Their throat is an open sepulcher; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: Their feet are swift to shed blood: Destruction and misery are in their ways: And the way of peace have they not known: There is no fear of God before their eyes."

Paul continues to build upon his point. Every man lives according to the flesh. That flesh is only desirous of one thing – whatever it takes to make me the center of the universe. The flesh only wants to please its own cravings. The flesh only wants to feel good, look good, and do its own thing. The flesh does not seek after God and doesn’t care to know Him, learn of Him or to hear from Him. No one craves the knowledge and understanding of God without the Holy Spirit drawing them. The flesh will never understand God and will ultimately have to be put down before we can reach any depth in the love of Jesus.

The flesh knows that it needs something more than it is able to produce but is unwilling to surrender to God who can supply that deep need to fill the empty chasm of our hearts. Man, in the flesh, attempts to produce his own “way to godhood.” We do so through our various religions, rituals, and ceremonies that are designed to ease the conscience, satisfy the mind and inspire the heart. The fulfillment is temporary at best and sacrilegious in its entirety. Man’s attempts to reach God are feeble, weak and impossible. Our miniscule attempts to reach out to the great God of all Creation are but puffs of smoke that are lost in the omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent God.

The flesh, not willing to be ruled by the true God, begins to justify its rebellious attitude. Man does all he can do to discredit or circumvent the confession that there is only one Lord, one God and that man must serve that one true God or lose his eternal soul.

The very nature of sin, born into the heart of every baby that comes into this world, is ever deteriorating into a more decadent lifestyle and condition of the heart. The power of sin, in all of its horror and tragedy, takes that, which is perfect, and causes all things to flow toward the negative.

Everything that man attempts to build or create simply deteriorates over time and usage. Look at that new car you bought and watch the miles build up. It’s disheartening to know that it is already wearing out so very quickly. Look at every religion that man has created to satisfy his needs and you will see that the lofty ideals that were present in the formation of a new religion will degenerate quickly over time to become a religion that brings a curse and damnation upon its followers rather than lead them ever closer to the God of Heaven. That new home already needs some repairs. Your new clothes and shoes are already showing signs of wear. Even it you don’t use it, the things we build will deteriorate quickly. An unused car loses value because of age, whether it’s driven or not.
