Now that you have been born
On planet earth -
What do you plan on doing?
"I’m going to Disney Land."
Eccl. 1
Don’t you just love the commercials that show some super sports star just after he or she has won a big event and the question is asked, "Now that you have just won the US Open or the World Series or the Super bowl - - What are you going to do now? They say "I’m going to Disney Land".
The book of Ecclesiastes is the Disney Land of the Bible.
If you can respond to the message of this book in a positive way - you will be in the minority. There are some here that will totally reject the wisdom that is taught by this book.
However, if you can respond to the wisdom found here - it will save you a world of misery and hurt and having to suffer the pain of a wrecked life.
THE WRITER: Solomon- Son of David - the preacher - the wisest man who ever lived -
He is depressed - pessimistic - negative - complaining - It is a book of Satire.
He has tried everything this world has to offer and his conclusion is: "All is Vanity and Vexation of Spirit."
The phrase "UNDER THE SUN" is the key phrase and is used 32 times.
Also we should note the Phrase "VANITY OF VANITY AND VEXATION OF SPIRIT" Verse 1:14
I have seen all the works that are done u7nder the sun and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of Spirit.
Def. of Vanity – "Empty, meaningless - without permanent value, that which leads to frustration and emptiness’."
Def. of Vexation of Spirit - Fighting the air - emptiness of the soul.
My question would be - What brought Solomon to this depressed, dejected state of mind?
THE ANSWER: He visited the Disney Land of the Bible.
He went on every ride that this Disney Land had to offer.
He visited every section of the Disney Land of this world.
He visited Frontier Land - Tomorrow Land - Fantasy Land -
Adventure Land - He rode space mountain and all the roller coasters of life.
Solomon tried everything this world had to offer and found it only brought Vanity and Vexation of Spirit.
I. HE GAVE HIMSELF TO SEEK KNOWLEDGE V-12,13
12I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem. 13And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith. 14I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
When you know that you know - All you know is that you know - You still have not done anything until you act right and responsible.
The wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. By wisdom the world knew not God.
If any man lack wisdom let him ask of God.
The difference between Wisdom and knowledge is that "Wisdom is the ability to put knowledge into a practical application to your life." If you can’t do that – all the knowledge in this world will not help you.
II. HE GAVE HIMSELF TO SEEK FOLLY & PLEASURE
17And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.
NIV 2:1I thought in my heart, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure to find out what is good.” But that also proved to be meaningless. 2“Laughter,” I said, “is foolish. And what does pleasure accomplish?”
Lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God.
III. HE GAVE HIMSELF TO SEEK THE STIMULATION OF THE FLESH NATURE.
2:3 I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, . . .
45 million people have a big problem with alcohol
96 billion barrels of bear sold each year
208 million sleeping pills
189 million tranquilizer
This does not even get into the illegal drugs.
The world has gone sex crazy.
A. If sex could have ever made anyone fulfilled - It would have been Solomon.
We have a world that has gone mad trying to stimulate the flesh nature and make them feel good for a little while. It just does not work.
V. HE GAVE HIMSELF TO SEEKING SUCCESS.
4 I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards: 5 I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits: 6 I made me pools of water, to water therewith the wood that bringeth forth trees:
He built the greatest kingdom. He had the greatest riches. He was the greatest in wisdom.
