I AND II PETER, I, II AND III JOHN

Introduction: In the previous lesson we studied the books of Philemon, Hebrews and James. This lesson will consist of a survey of the epistles of Peter and John. I Peter is the book of Christian Discipline. II Peter is the book Christian Diligence. I John is the book of Christian Declaration, the declaration that we know we are saved. II John is the book of Christian Devotion. III John is the book of Christian Decency.

I PETER

I. SURVEY

A. Writer: The Apostle Peter

B. Date: Between 60 and 70 A.D.

C. Purpose: Nero was the emperor of Rome. In order to cover his own crime of burning part of Rome, he found a

scapegoat in the Christians. Tremendous persecutions of Christians followed. The epistle of 1st Peter was

written to show the Christian how to walk and live in the midst of suffering. Peter was writing to comfort the

believers in their trials, and to encourage them to rejoice in their suffering for Christ’s sake.

1. “Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice

with joy unspeakable and full of glory.” I Peter 1:8

2. “But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye

may be glad also with exceeding joy.” I Peter 4:13

II PETER

I. SURVEY

A. Writer: The Apostle Peter

B. Date: Between 60 and 70 A.D.

C. Purpose: To emphasize what the apostle had written in his first epistle. It is a book which describes the

apostasy of the last days.

D. Key Verses: “Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away

with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. But grow in grace and in the knowledge of our

Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.” II Peter 3:17-18

E. Key Word: Knowledge

F. Attraction: The content of this book is much like the book of Jude. While we mention in the above section that

this epistle describes the apostasy of the last days, we do want to point out that there has been apostasy in the

Church since its foundation and on down through the ages of Church History. Peter Paul and John all had

witnessed this apostasy.

II. OUTLINE

A. The Atonement of the Saviour - II Peter 1:1-14

1. By Atonement we do not mean the Old Testament appreciation of it which meant covering. I’m talking about

Reconciliation as spoken of in Romans 5:11

2. Peter is declaring that he is a bondslave of Jesus Christ. He has been bought by the blood and is bound to

Christ by love.

3. He is writing to all believers who have obtained the faith which has made them wise unto salvation.

4. This faith which has brought salvation has been bestowed through the righteousness of God and Jesus Christ.

B. The Adoration for the Scriptures - II Peter 1:15-21

1. We have a Sure Word -- vs. 19a

2. We have a Shining Word -- vs. 19b

3. We have a Sound Word -- vs. 20

4. We have a Spoken Word -- Vs. 21

C. The Activities of Satan - II Peter 2:1-22

1. As God works in this world to redeem sinners out of the world, so Satan works to destroy the works of God.

2. God has his teachers, and the Devil has his.

3. God has bestowed gifts upon believers, while Satan has bestowed his gifts upon the unbelievers.

4. Keep in mind when you read verse 21 and 22 of chapter 2 that Peter is speaking of false teachers, and not

saints who have lost their salvation.

D. The Anticipation of the Saints - II Peter 3:1-18

1.Anticipating the Rapture - vs. 1-9

2. Anticipating the Return - vs. 10a “But the day of the Lord will come as a theif in the night;”

3. Anticipating Retribution - vs. 10b - 12

4. Anticipating the Rebuilding - vs. 13a “new heavens and a new earth”

5. Anticipating His Reign - vs. 13b “wherein dwelleth righteousness”
