Preach "The King Has Come" 3-Part Series this week!
Preach Christmas week
Good morning, church family! We're diving right into the heart of the Gospel of John today, specifically John 8:12-20, where Jesus makes one of His most profound declarations, "I am the light of the world." Now, that's a statement that calls for our attention, isn't it? It's a bold claim that invites us to trust Jesus and put all our faith in Him. It also reminds us to be careful about judging others and ourselves.
C.S. Lewis, a respected Christian author, once said, "I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else." This quote ties beautifully with today's sermon because Jesus, as the Light of the World, helps us see everything else clearly.
In the Gospel of John, Jesus declares Himself as the "Light of the World," a statement that is both profound and significant. This proclamation is not just a metaphorical representation, but a spiritual reality that carries deep implications for our lives.
A. Firstly, when we consider light in its physical sense, it serves as a source of illumination that dispels darkness. Similarly, Jesus, as the Light of the World, illuminates our spiritual darkness. He brings clarity where there is confusion, hope where there is despair, and truth where there are lies. Our world is often shrouded in the darkness of sin, ignorance, and unbelief. However, Jesus penetrates this darkness with His light, revealing to us the path of righteousness and leading us towards eternal life.
B. Secondly, light is essential for life. Just as plants need sunlight to grow through the process of photosynthesis, we need the light of Jesus for spiritual growth. His teachings nourish our souls, enabling us to grow in faith, love, and holiness. Without His light, we would be like plants trying to survive without sunlight, stunted and unable to thrive.
C. Thirdly, light also serves as a guide. It shows us the way when we are lost and prevents us from stumbling in the darkness. Jesus, as our guiding light, directs our steps and decisions according to God's will. He guides us through the complexities of life, ensuring that we do not stray from the path that leads to God.
D. Fourthly, light exposes what is hidden in darkness. In the same way, Jesus exposes the hidden recesses of our hearts, revealing our true selves. He uncovers our sins, not to condemn us, but to lead us to repentance and transformation. By bringing our sins into the light, He gives us the opportunity to confront them, seek forgiveness, and experience His grace.
E. Furthermore, Jesus' declaration as the Light of the World is not just about His role, but also about our response. He invites us to follow Him, to walk in His light, and to become reflections of His light in the world. As followers of Jesus, we are called to shine His light in the dark corners of our world, bringing hope, love, and truth to those around us.
F. However, Jesus' claim was met with skepticism and resistance by the Pharisees, a reminder that not everyone will accept or understand His light. They questioned His authority and testimony, refusing to acknowledge Him as the Messiah. This resistance to the light is a reality we still face today, as many choose to remain in darkness rather than embracing the light of Jesus.
