Summary: Youth Talk: If you honor and respect your parents they will do what you want them to do (because you’ll be wanting what they want)
How to get your parents to do exactly what you want them to
1) Why are you here? Because of the cool title?
a) Can you imagine saying “Dad I want this …” and he says “sure Honey”
b) What kind of things would you like your parents to do for you that they aren’t doing now.
c) Stacy comes and cuddles and tickles and squeezes my hand. She even writes me notes in church … what do you think I say when she asks “Dad can I…?”
d) This approach works with kids but somehow it doesn’t carry through to teenage years.
e) Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority and disrespect for older people. Children nowadays are tyrants. They no longer rise when their elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble their food and tyrannise their teachers” Socrates 5 BC
f) Deu 21:18 If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him, 19 his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. 20 They shall say to the elders, “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a profligate and a drunkard.” 21 Then all the men of his town shall stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you.
2) Two things that you need to do in order to get your parents to do whatever you want them to.
a) Deal with what you’re going through
b) Understand what your parents are going through
3) Deal with what you’re going through
a) Adolescence
i) What happens during adolescence? (discuss)
ii) Forming own values
iii) Becoming independent – but not wanting to accept responsibility for your actions.
b) How will this help?
i) Become a more likable person.
c) How do you deal with this?
i) 8 miles or 800 kms
4) Understand what your parents are going through.
a) Chart
b) Mid Life symptoms
i) Similar to adolescence
c) Don’t put extra demands on them
d) Pray for them
Conc, Understand your parents … you will be able to deal with your own MidLife a lot better.
