By: Dr. Dennis Deese - www.dennisdeese.com
JOHN 5:21-47
(John 5 :10-16 His Lordship is Defied, John 5:17-47 His Lordship is Declared, John 6:1-14 His Lordship is Demonstrated.)
ETS: Jesus’ Lordship is substantiated.
ESS: If Jesus is truly Lord, then He ought to be Lord of our life.
Lord: 2962 - Kurios (Koo-ree-os): Supreme in authority, controller, wielding authority for good.
I believe without question the greatest solution to life’s most perplexing and difficult problems that people face today is learning how Jesus can be the Lord of their life.
How can Jesus Christ become the Lord of our life?
1. YOU MUST ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST’S AUTHORITY 5:43
1. Notice the decision most people tragically make 5:43 (See Matthew 2:3)
This is the same word with the same meaning used in Matt. 14:26 "frightened" It means "deep agitation"
Herod’s response to the one born king of the Jews was one of fear & jealousy. He had usurped the throne and lived in constant fear of intrigue or assassination. He had even executed several members of his own family and others who were close to him.
There is no record of anyone responding at the conclusion of this message proclaimed by the Lord Jesus. How tragic!
2. Consider the opportunity you and I have 5:25
5:25 VOICE: 5456 - of-nay: disclosure, that wich brings light upon that which is thought in the mind
No doubt He’s talking about the spiritual ear. If not, then He would be excluding all those who are hearing impaired.
Romans 1:18-20 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed [it] unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, [even] his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
Romans 1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in [their] knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
3. What are the Credentials for Jesus’ Lordship? If I am going to have someone controlling my life, and expect you to turn the control your life over to someone, then without a doubt, that person needs to be qualified!
1. His equality with God 5:17-20, *18,
John 10:30 I and [my] Father are one.
Philippians 2:5-8 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
Form: for-may: the essence and nature of God!
How are they equal? 4 primary ways are clearly revealed:
1. In Works 5:17, 20 & 36 “the works that I do”
Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
Colossians 1:15-17 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
2. In Will 5:17, 30 “The Son can do nothing of himself”
3. In Worship 5:23 “all honor the Son” (See John 10:25-33)
Philippians 2:9-11 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Colossians 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all [things] he might have the preeminence.
John 20:28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.
John 9:38 And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.
Matthew 2:2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. (The wise men)
Hebrews 1:6 And again, when he bringeth in the first begotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.
