Explores Abram's journey of faith and obedience, encouraging us to heed God's call, harness our faith, and harvest His promises in our lives.
Good morning, dear family of Christ. I greet you with the joy and peace that can only come from our Lord Jesus Christ. Today, we gather here, not by chance, but by divine appointment. We are here to engage with God’s Word, to hear His voice, and to respond to His call.
As we gather in this sacred space, let us remember the words of the great preacher Charles Spurgeon who once said, "A Bible that's falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn't." This is a reminder for us all that the answers we seek, the comfort we long for, and the guidance we need are all found in the living, breathing Word of God.
So, let us turn to this boundless source of wisdom and truth today. Our Scripture passage is from Genesis 12:1-9. It says:
[Read passage]
This passage tells a story of faith, obedience, and divine promise. It tells us about Abram, who would later become Abraham, the father of many nations. But before he became the man we know from the Bible, he was simply Abram, a man who was willing to listen and obey when God called.
As we reflect on this passage, we will focus on three main points: Heeding God's Call, Harnessing Your Faith, and Harvesting God's Promises.
But before we do, let us bow our heads in prayer.
Heavenly Father, we thank you for your Word which is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. As we reflect on the story of Abram, open our hearts and minds to understand your truth. Teach us to heed your call, to harness our faith, and to harvest your promises. In Jesus' name, we pray, amen.
Now, let us engage with God's Word together.
In the passage we read, we see Abram, an ordinary man living an ordinary life. But then, he hears the voice of God. God tells him to leave everything he knows, his country, his people, his father's household, and go to a land that God will show him. This is not a small request. It's a life-altering, destiny-shaping command. And Abram's response? He goes. He listens, he obeys, he follows.
Obey like Abram: When God calls, we need to listen and obey. It's not always easy. In fact, it's often hard. It can mean leaving behind what's comfortable and familiar. It can mean stepping out into the unknown. But that's what faith is all about. It's about trusting God even when we can't see the whole picture. It's about believing that He knows what's best for us, even when we don't understand.
What it means to heed God's call in our own lives: It might not be as dramatic as Abram's call. God might not ask us to leave our country and our family. But He still calls us. He calls us to follow Him, to serve Him, to love Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. And just like Abram, we need to listen and obey.
But how do we know when God is calling us? How do we discern His voice amidst the noise and distractions of the world?
A relationship with God: Abram knew God's voice because he had a relationship with Him. He spent time with God. He talked to God. He listened to God. And because of that, he recognized God's voice when He called. This is a reminder for us to cultivate our relationship with God. We need to spend time with Him in prayer and in His Word. We need to quiet our hearts and minds so we can hear His voice. And when we do, we need to be ready to respond, to say, "Here I am, Lord. Send me."
The consequences of heeding God's call: When Abram obeyed God's command, it led him to a land of promise and blessing. God told him, "I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing." Abram's obedience opened the door to God's blessings not just for him, but for all peoples on earth. When we heed God's call, it leads to blessing. Not just for us, but for others as well. Our obedience can have a ripple effect, touching the lives of those around us and even those far away.
The faithfulness of God in Abram's story: God made a promise to Abram, and He kept it. He said He would lead Abram to a new land, and He did. He said He would make Abram into a great nation, and He did. He said He would bless Abram, and He did. God's faithfulness is a golden thread that runs through Abram's story, and it's a thread that runs through our stories as well. God is faithful. When He calls us, He equips us. When He leads us, He provides for us. When He promises, He delivers. We can trust Him, because He is faithful and true.
