I. Closing Confirmation
“This is the disciple who testifies of these things” John here is saying (quite possibly in the third person, or through a scribe) in essence, I am a son of Thunder, my father is Zebedee, I am a disciple, a follower of Christ! John is confirming his authorship. He is signing his letter at this point!
II. Testimony
“We know that his testimony is true!” How can we know that John’s testimony was true? Well for one, this book made it into the Cannon, the sixty six books, we call the Bible, and secondly–we believe that the Bible is the authoritative word of God that is divinely inspired!
III. Explanation-exaggeration READ 25
In essence, in Paul’s closing words he says “Gentlemen, Ladies, there are many other things that Jesus did, but I couldn’t write them down fast enough, as a matter of fact....if I had taken the time to write them all down, not even the entire world could contain the books that would be written!”
Have you ever marveled at all the things that Jesus did in His three years of ministry? Water into wine, gave living waters to the woman at the well, fed 5000, raised Lazarus from the dead, was raised from the dead Himself, ate with sinners–tax men–publicans, healed the sick, cast out demons, was baptized in the Jordan river by John, settled a dispute between two sisters, (Mary-Martha), said “Today thou shalt be with me in paradise!”
....and much, much, more...that is recorded in scripture!
And then John throws 21:25 into the mix... “I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written, if we would have been able to get it all in writing!”
Just something to think about!
