BIBLE PASSAGE: The Lord will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. Psalm 121:7-8
BACKGROUND: Throughout life, we may feel discouraged and down. But always remember that He is by our side and watches over us through it all. Do not be troubled because we have the King of kings on our side!
HIS EYES IS ON THE SPARROW
Civilla Martin was born in 1866 in Nova Scotia, Canada. She married an evangelist and they together travelled all over the United States conducting evangelistic campaigns. She worked with him on music during those meetings.
This song was inspired by a visit that Civilla made to an ill and bedridden friend. Her friend was discouraged by her illness but remembered a God who watches over each little sparrow and she, therefore, believed that the same God would watch over her.
It is from this incident that Mrs Martin thought of writing a poem about this incident. She completed it the same day.
The Lord is with us. He holds our future and our safety in His hands. Our deliverance and safety are promised and rest assured. Nobody protects like our God! Nobody keeps like our God! Nobody preserves like our God and nobody watches like our Lord! He is the great protector.
At first glance, Psalm 121:7 offers tremendous assurance. The Lord will keep us from all harm! Wow! That sounds wonderful.
The sparrow is one of the smallest birds in the world and may be considered as of no consequence to many people and could be sold cheaply. But Jesus says God does still does care and notices when one of them falls to the ground.
This is as per Matthew 10:29-31, "Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows."
If God cares about the tiny sparrow, how much more will He care for your needs, my dear friend of God? That is the message and meaning of this phrase, "His eye is on the sparrow"
His Eye Is On The Sparrow lyrics
Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heaven and home,
When Jesus is my portion? My constant friend is He:
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.
I sing because I'm happy,
I sing because I'm free,
For His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me.
2 Samuel 22:3-4: My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my saviour; you save me from violence. I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies.
Nahum 1:7: The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him.
It was Ben Franklin who said, “God helps those who help themselves,” but the Scriptures teach us that God helps those who seek his help. None of us is safe until we take refuge in God.
We can seek and find additional refuge in God. We can go to him in prayer, and we can seek refuge in his word.
Malachi 3:6: “For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.
In prayer, we find the refuge of comfort as we commune with the one who loves us. We may find instruction that leads us away from danger as the good shepherd speaks to our hearts. The refuge we find in his word is everything we need for our lives through his promises.
And when we make God our refuge, we have security in Him.
That's the kind of protection God has provided for us.
We have a refuge or a covering that is greater than anything in the world and more powerful than any enemy that can come against us.
God can keep you covered. You don’t need anyone else covering you when you have Him covering you. People will let you down, but the armour will never let you down.
Be confident that God encircles you, taking care of you and protecting you. The more you walk with Him and trust Him, the stronger that armour and protection become. And that’s something to rejoice about!
The Lord can keep you because there’s nothing this God cannot do.
