Plan for: Thanksgiving | Advent | Christmas
God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-discipline. We can overcome unhealthy fear by relying on the Holy Spirit's power, focusing on God's love, and developing self-discipline.
Ever been scared out of your wits? Like, heart-pounding, palms-sweating scared? Did you know the phrase 'fear not' pops up 365 times in the Bible? That's one for every day of the year! God doesn't want us living in fear, so let's figure out how to kick it to the curb.
Let's start with this: In 2 Timothy 1:7, Paul tells Timothy that God didn't give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-discipline. So, where does fear come from? There's good fear and bad fear. Good fear can save your life, like when you're face-to-face with a grizzly bear or in a dangerous situation. It's a natural response that keeps us safe.
God didn't give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
Bad fear, though, can freeze us in our tracks and hold us back. It's not from God, and it's not what He wants for us. God wants us to grow in our faith and overcome obstacles. Sometimes, following Jesus can lead to ridicule or persecution, but we shouldn't let fear stop us. Instead, we've been given a spirit of power, love, and self-discipline to face any challenge.
Now, imagine you're holding a flashlight. It's dark, and you're scared. But when you switch on that flashlight, the darkness disappears. That's like the power we have when the Holy Spirit is in us. Jesus promised His disciples that they would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them. This power can do amazing things and conquer any fear. So, when fear tries to hold you back, remember to switch on your 'spiritual flashlight' and let the power of the Holy Spirit overcome it.
Next, think about love. The Bible tells us that perfect love drives out fear. When we walk in love, fear has no place in our lives. Jesus showed us the ultimate example of love when He sacrificed Himself on the cross for us. If we focus on His love for us and share that love with others, fear will lose its grip on us. So, let's choose love over fear and experience the freedom it brings.
Lastly, let's talk about self-discipline. It's not always easy to overcome fear, but with self-discipline, we can do it. We need to be disciplined in recognizing and dealing with fear. It takes effort to form new habits and respond to fear with power and love. Thankfully, through the Holy Spirit, we have the power to develop self-discipline and overcome fear.
So, here's your challenge for this week: when you feel fear, take a moment to figure out if it's good fear or bad fear. If it's a dangerous situation, use your common sense and take appropriate action. But if it's bad fear, remember that God has given you a spirit of power, love, and self-discipline. Pray for His strength to overcome fear and trust that He will help you. Also, keep a record of the situations that make you fearful and look for patterns. Learning to diagnose fear is an important step in overcoming it.
Let's pray together, God, help us recognize and overcome unhealthy fear with Your power, love, and self-discipline. Amen.
1. What is one fear you struggle with and why?
2. How can you apply the power, love, and self-discipline God gives us to overcome this fear?
3. Share a time when you overcame fear. How did it make you feel?
4. How can we support each other in overcoming our fears?
