INTRODUCTION

John the Baptist stands as one of the greatest examples of humility in Scripture. Though he had a powerful ministry that drew multitudes, he understood clearly that his role was to prepare the way for Christ. When Jesus began His public ministry and His influence grew, John did not compete for recognition but joyfully declared, “He must increase, but I must decrease.”

This statement reflects a profound spiritual principle in the Christian life. True discipleship requires the surrender of personal ambition, pride, and self-centredness so that Christ may be glorified. The believer’s life should gradually reflect less of self and more of Christ’s character, authority, and presence.

In a world that encourages self-promotion and personal glory, the message of John the Baptist calls believers back to humility and submission. When Christ becomes the centre of our lives, His power, grace, and purpose are manifested more fully in us.

1. RECOGNISING THE SUPREMACY OF CHRIST

The first step in decreasing self is acknowledging that Christ alone deserves ultimate honour, authority, and glory.

a. Christ Is Above All (John 3:31)

Jesus comes from above and therefore stands above every earthly authority. Recognising His supremacy places our lives under His lordship.

b. Christ Is the Source of Truth (John 3:32-33)

Jesus speaks what He has seen and heard from the Father. Those who receive His testimony affirm that God is true.

c. Christ Possesses the Spirit Without Measure (John 3:34)

Unlike human limitations, Christ carries the fullness of the Spirit of God, revealing His divine authority.

d. Christ Holds All Authority (Matthew 28:18)

All power in heaven and earth has been given to Christ, confirming that He must take first place in our lives.

Biblical Example:

The apostle Thomas acknowledged Christ’s supremacy when he declared, “My Lord and my God” after seeing the risen Jesus (John 20:28).

2. CULTIVATING A HEART OF HUMILITY

For Christ to increase in our lives, we must willingly surrender pride and embrace humility.

a. Acknowledging Our Dependence on God (John 3:27)

John the Baptist recognised that a person can receive nothing unless it is given from heaven. Every gift and opportunity comes from God.

b. Valuing God’s Glory Above Personal Recognition (Philippians 2:3)

Believers are called to esteem others better than themselves and to reject selfish ambition.

c. Learning from the Humility of Christ (Philippians 2:5-8)

Jesus humbled Himself and became obedient unto death. His example defines true greatness in the Kingdom.

d. Walking in Meekness and Submission (James 4:10)

God promises to lift up those who humble themselves before Him.

Biblical Example:

Moses demonstrated humility when he submitted to God’s calling despite his personal limitations, eventually becoming a great leader of Israel (Numbers 12:3).

3. SURRENDERING PERSONAL AMBITION

The desire for personal glory must give way to a commitment to Christ’s purpose.

a. Taking Up the Cross (Matthew 16:24)

Following Christ requires denying oneself and embracing the path of sacrificial obedience.

b. Counting All Things as Loss (Philippians 3:7-8)

Paul regarded worldly achievements as loss compared to the surpassing value of knowing Christ.

c. Living for Christ Rather Than Self (Galatians 2:20)

The believer’s life becomes an expression of Christ living through them.

d. Seeking God’s Kingdom First (Matthew 6:33)

When believers prioritise God’s Kingdom, He faithfully provides for their needs.

Biblical Example:

The apostle Paul surrendered his status and influence as a Pharisee to follow Christ, dedicating his life to preaching the Gospel (Acts 9:15-16).

4. ALLOWING CHRIST TO BE REVEALED THROUGH US

As self decreases, the character and power of Christ become increasingly evident in the believer’s life.

a. Reflecting the Character of Christ (Colossians 3:12-14)

Believers are called to put on compassion, kindness, humility, and love as reflections of Christ’s nature.

b. Living as Ambassadors of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20)

Our lives represent Christ to the world, demonstrating His grace and truth.

c. Manifesting the Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)

The presence of Christ within us produces spiritual fruit that transforms our relationships and actions.

d. Letting Christ Be Seen in Our Works (Matthew 5:16)

When believers live righteously, others see their good works and glorify God.

Biblical Example:

Stephen demonstrated Christ’s character when he forgave those who persecuted him, reflecting the spirit of Christ even in suffering (Acts 7:59-60).

CONCLUSION

The declaration of John the Baptist, “He must increase, but I must decrease,” remains a guiding principle for every believer. Christianity is not about elevating ourselves but about exalting Christ in every area of life. When Christ becomes central, our attitudes, priorities, and actions begin to reflect His will.

As believers surrender pride and personal ambition, Christ’s presence grows stronger within them. Through humility, obedience, and faith, the life of Christ becomes evident, bringing glory to God and blessing to the world.
