Plan for: Thanksgiving | Advent | Christmas
Assurance of eternal life is found solely in faith in Jesus Christ, as He is the true God and eternal life.
Good morning, church family! Today, we're going to talk about a topic that's near and dear to all of us: the assurance of eternal life. Now, this isn't just for those of us who have it all figured out, or those who feel like they don't have anything. This is for everyone, because the assurance of eternal life is found in one place, and one place only: Jesus Christ. As the renowned Christian author, A.W. Tozer once said, "He who has God and everything else has no more than he who has God only."
The assurance of eternal life is a promise that God has given to all who believe in His Son, Jesus Christ. This assurance is not dependent on our earthly possessions, achievements, or status. It is not about the 'haves' or the 'have nots' in a material sense. Rather, it's about having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. This is the first and most important point we need to understand.
A. The 'haves' in our context are those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. They have acknowledged their sinfulness, repented, and turned to Christ for forgiveness and salvation. They have the assurance of eternal life because they have Jesus, and Jesus is life. In John 14:6, Jesus said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." This means that eternal life is not something we earn or achieve, but a gift we receive through faith in Jesus Christ.
The Apostle John, in the passage we read, wrote to believers, assuring them of their eternal life. He said, "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life." This assurance is not based on our feelings, circumstances, or performance, but on God's unchanging Word and His faithful character. God is not a man that He should lie, nor a son of man that He should change His mind. If He said it, He will do it. If He promised, He will fulfill it.
B. The 'haves' also have the privilege of approaching God with confidence in prayer. John said, "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him." This is a wonderful privilege and assurance. We can come to God with our needs, desires, and concerns, knowing that He hears us and will answer us according to His will.
C. Furthermore, the 'haves' have the assurance of God's protection from the evil one. John said, "We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them." This does not mean that believers will not face trials, temptations, or attacks from the enemy. But it means that they are kept safe in Christ, and the enemy cannot snatch them out of His hand.
D. Lastly, the 'haves' have the assurance of knowing the true God through His Son, Jesus Christ. John said, "We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life." Knowing God is not just about having intellectual knowledge about Him, but having a personal, intimate relationship with Him through Jesus Christ. This is the greatest assurance and joy of the 'haves'.
Again, assurance is not dependent on our earthly possessions, achievements, or status, but solely on our faith in Jesus Christ ... View this full PRO sermon free with PRO
