Summary: Part 1 of the Colossians Series
HAS THE GOOD NEWS CHANGED YOU?
COLOSSIANS 1:1-8
This letter is from Paul, chosen by God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and from our brother Timothy. It is written to God’s holy people in the city of Colosse, who are faithful brothers and sisters in Christ. May God our Father give you grace and peace. We always pray for you, and we give thanks to God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 4for we have heard that you trust in Christ Jesus and that you love all of God’s people. 5You do this because you are looking forward to the joys of heaven—as you have been ever since you first heard the truth of the Good News. 6This same Good News that came to you is going out all over the world. It is changing lives everywhere, just as it changed yours that very first day you heard and understood the truth about God’s great kindness to sinners.7Epaphras, our much loved co-worker, was the one who brought you the Good News. He is Christ’s faithful servant, and he is helping us in your place. 8He is the one who told us about the great love for others that the Holy Spirit has given you. Col. 1:1-8 (NLT)
I. Trusting Christ should change our attitude.
A. By helping us love others.
for we have heard that you trust in Christ Jesus and that you love all of God’s people. Col. 1:4 (NLT)
B. By giving us joy because of our future.
You do this because you are looking forward to the joys of heaven—as you have been ever since you first heard the truth of the Good News. Col. 1:5 (NLT)
C. By hearing and believing the Good News
This same Good News that came to you is going out all over the world. It is changing lives everywhere, Col. 1:6a (NLT)
II. Trusting Christ should transform our actions.
A. We should be motivated by God’s kindness to serve.
just as it changed yours that very first day you heard and understood the truth about God’s great kindness to sinners. Col. 1:6b (NLT)
B. We should be faithfully serving Christ.
Epaphras, our much loved co-worker, was the one who brought you the Good News. He is Christ’s faithful servant, and he is helping us in your place. Col. 1:7 (NLT)
C. We should be seeking the Holy Spirit for
transformation
He is the one who told us about the great love for others that the Holy Spirit has given you. Col. 1:8 (NLT)
III. Has Christ’s truth changed you?
A. What is your attitude toward other believers?
So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. 35Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” John 13:34-35 (NLT)
B. What is your attitude toward the lost?
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17God did not send his Son into the world to condemn it, but to save it.
John 3:16-17 (NLT)
C. Have you been transformed?
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will know what God wants you to do, and you will know how good and pleasing and perfect his will really is. As God’s messenger, I give each of you this warning: Be honest in your estimate of yourselves, measuring your value by how much faith God has given you. Rom. 12:2-3 (NLT)
