Plan for: Thanksgiving | Advent | Christmas
Explores finding hope in God's timing and deepening our dependence on Him amidst life's uncertainties and injustices, as exemplified by the prophet Habakkuk.
Good morning, beloved congregation. Isn't it a joy to gather together, united in our faith, bound by the love of our Savior, Jesus Christ? We are here, not out of obligation, but out of a deep and abiding love for our Creator and for each other.
Today, we find ourselves turning to the book of Habakkuk, nestled in the heart of the Old Testament. This minor prophet has a major message for us, a message that resonates deeply in our world today. Habakkuk lived in a time of uncertainty and fear, much like the times we are living in. He wrestled with questions that we, too, wrestle with. How long, Lord, must we call for help and you do not listen? Why do you tolerate wrongdoing? Why does injustice seem to prevail?
Let's take a moment to read this passage together:
[Read passage]
Habakkuk's words echo in our hearts, don't they? They resonate with the cries of our own hearts, the questions we ask when we look at the world around us.
But friends, let me remind you of the words of the great Christian author, J.I. Packer, who once said, "God uses chronic pain and weakness, along with other afflictions, as his chisel for sculpting our lives. Felt weakness deepens dependence on Christ for strength each day."
In our weakness, in our questioning, we are drawn to a deeper dependence on God. We are reminded that our hope is not in the circumstances of this world, but in the unchanging character of our God.
So today, we will walk through Habakkuk's words, hearing God in the silence, holding onto faith in uncertainty, and finding hope in God's timing.
Let us pray:
Father God, as we open Your word today, we ask that You would open our hearts. Help us to hear Your voice in the silence, to hold onto faith in the midst of uncertainty, and to find hope in Your perfect timing. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
Let’s get started!
In the midst of Habakkuk's despair, he cried out to God. He was honest about his feelings, his fears, his frustrations. He didn't shy away from asking the hard questions. And then, he waited. He waited for God to answer. He waited in the silence.
Immediate responses: When we find ourselves in similar situations, when we're wrestling with questions and doubts, we often expect God to respond immediately. We want answers, and we want them now. But God doesn't always work that way. Sometimes, He speaks in the silence. Sometimes, He uses the quiet to draw us closer to Him, to help us listen more intently, to help us focus on His voice and His voice alone.
In the silence, we're reminded of our dependence on God: We're reminded that we can't do this on our own. We need His guidance, His wisdom, His strength. And so, we wait. We wait in the silence, trusting that God is at work, even when we can't see it. The silence can be uncomfortable. It can be disconcerting. It can make us feel alone. But we're not alone. God is with us. He's working in us and through us, even in the silence. We just need to be still and listen.
In the silence, we can find peace: The world around us is noisy. It's full of distractions and demands. But in the silence, we can find a sense of calm, a sense of peace that surpasses all understanding. It's a peace that comes from knowing that God is in control, that He's working all things together for our good.
In the silence, we can find clarity: When we quiet our minds, when we tune out the noise of the world, we can hear God's voice more clearly. We can gain a better understanding of His will for our lives. We can see things from His perspective.
In the silence, we can find strength: It's in the quiet moments, when we're alone with God, that we can draw on His strength. We can find the courage to face our fears, to confront our doubts, to persevere in the face of adversity.
So, let's embrace the silence.
