Highlight the power and impact of our words, urging us to exercise self-control in our speech as guided by the Bible.
Good Morning, Church Family! Today we're going to delve into the truth about our words and the power they carry. We're going to look at what the Bible has to say about the power of the tongue, the consequences of uncontrolled speech, and the blessings of self-control.
There's a quote by Mother Teresa that perfectly encapsulates our topic for today: "Words which do not give the light of Christ increase the darkness." Let's make our words matter for the Kingdom!

Let's bow our heads in prayer.
Dear Heavenly Father, as we learn about the power of our words today, may we be reminded of Your Word and its power in our lives. Teach us to tame our tongues, to speak love instead of hate, peace instead of strife, and truth instead of deceit. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Alright, let's get started, shall we?
The power of the tongue is a theme that is reiterated time and again throughout the Bible, emphasizing the immense influence our words can have, not just on our own lives, but also on the lives of those around us. The tongue, though physically small, is mighty in its impact. It can build up or tear down, encourage or discourage, heal or harm, depending on how we choose to use it.
James 3:5 says: "Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts." This verse vividly illustrates the potential of our words to influence situations and people. Our words can either affirm or negate, they can inspire or deflate. They can be a source of comfort and encouragement, or they can be a weapon of destruction. The power of the tongue lies in our ability to choose our words wisely, to use them as a tool for good rather than a weapon for harm.
It’s like fire: The Bible also likens the tongue to a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. This metaphor underscores the destructive potential of our words if not controlled. Just as a small spark can set a whole forest ablaze, a single word spoken in anger or spite can cause irreparable damage. It can ruin relationships, shatter trust, and leave deep emotional scars. This is why it's crucial to exercise restraint and control over our words, to think before we speak, and to always strive to speak words that edify rather than tear down.
The words we choose not to speak: Proverbs 21:23 tells us, "Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from troubles." This verse highlights the importance of silence, of knowing when to speak and when to hold our peace. Sometimes, the most powerful thing we can say is nothing at all. By choosing to remain silent in situations where our words may cause harm, we demonstrate wisdom and self-control.
The words we speak over ourselves: The words we use to describe ourselves, our circumstances, and our future have a profound impact on our mindset, our attitude, and our actions. By speaking words of faith, hope, and positivity, we can shift our perspective, overcome challenges, and step into the fullness of God's promises for our lives.
It's a reminder of our responsibility to use our words wisely, to speak life and not death, to build up and not tear down, to encourage and not discourage.
