This sermon encourages embracing humility, focusing on Christ for spiritual nourishment, and striving for continual growth in faith, guided by God's grace.

Introduction

Good morning, beloved brothers and sisters in Christ. It's a joy to be standing here with you today, basking under the light of God's grace, and sharing a word that He has laid on my heart. We gather here not by chance but by divine appointment, each one of us drawn together by the golden thread of faith that binds us as one family in Christ.

Today, we will be opening the sacred pages of our Bibles to the second chapter of Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, verses one through three. Let us read:

"And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling."

As we prepare our hearts to receive these truths, let's remember the words of Charles Spurgeon who once said, "Humility is to make a right estimate of oneself." In the light of this quote, may we approach today's sermon with a humble heart, ready to receive and grow.

Let's bow our heads in prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, we thank You for this gathering, for Your Word, and for the opportunity to grow in You. As we delve into Your Word today, we ask that You open our hearts and minds, that we may receive Your truth with humility and grace. May Your Word guide us, nourish us, and spur us towards spiritual growth in Christ. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Harnessing the Humility of a Newborn in Spirit

When we think about the humility of a newborn, we're drawn to the image of a tiny, innocent child, completely dependent on others for survival. This child knows nothing of the world, has no preconceived notions or prejudices, and is open to learning and experiencing everything for the first time. This is the kind of humility we're talking about - a humility that comes from acknowledging our dependence on God, our lack of knowledge, and our openness to His teachings.

In the spiritual realm, we are all newborns. We are born into a new life when we accept Christ as our Savior. This new life requires us to let go of our old ways, our old knowledge, and our old self. We are called to be humble, to acknowledge that we know nothing apart from what God reveals to us. This is the first step in our spiritual growth.

Paul, in his letter to the Corinthians, exemplifies this humility. Despite being a learned man, well-versed in the scriptures and a former Pharisee, he chose to approach the Corinthians as a humble servant of Christ. He did not rely on his own wisdom or eloquence but on the power of the Holy Spirit. He acknowledged his weakness, his fear, and his trembling, showing his total dependence on God.

This humility is not a sign of weakness but of strength. It takes courage to admit our limitations, to acknowledge our dependence on God, and to let go of our pride. It is through this humility that we open ourselves to God's grace, His wisdom, and His strength.
