Good morning, Church! Today we'll be diving into a passage that is a beacon of hope, even in the darkest times. We're talking about God's Unfailing Faithfulness, The Hope of Restoration, and The Comfort of His Presence. Our focus will be on Lamentations 3:22-31. This Scripture reminds us that no matter what we're going through, God's faithfulness is unwavering, His restoration is certain, and His presence is comforting.
Before we delve into this, let's recall the words of the great C.S. Lewis, who once said, "Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny." This quote is a perfect reminder that through every trial and tribulation, God is refining us, preparing us for greater things.
Now, let's read the verses together: "Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, 'The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.' The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is young. Let him sit alone in silence, for the Lord has laid it on him. Let him bury his face in the dust—there may yet be hope. Let him offer his cheek to one who would strike him, and let him be filled with disgrace. For no one is cast off by the Lord forever."
God's unfailing faithfulness is a cornerstone of our Christian faith. It is the bedrock upon which we build our trust in Him, and it is the anchor that holds us steady in the storms of life. The prophet Jeremiah, who penned the book of Lamentations, was no stranger to adversity. He lived through the fall of Jerusalem and witnessed the horrors of war, famine, and exile. Yet, in the midst of such despair, he declared, "Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness."
A. This statement is profound. It tells us that God's faithfulness is not dependent on our circumstances. Whether we are on the mountaintop of victory or in the valley of despair, God remains faithful. His love for us is so great that it prevents us from being consumed by our trials. His compassion towards us never fails, even when we do. Every morning, we can wake up to a fresh outpouring of His mercy and grace because His faithfulness is great.
B. God's faithfulness is also not dependent on our performance. We don't have to earn His faithfulness; it is part of His character. He cannot be unfaithful, just as He cannot lie or deny Himself. This is a comforting truth for us, especially when we feel like we've failed or fallen short. We can rest in the assurance that God remains faithful to us, even when we are faithless.
C. Moreover, God's faithfulness is a promise. Jeremiah says, "The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him." This speaks of an expectation, a confident hope in God's faithfulness. We can wait on God because we know that He will come through for us. He will fulfill His promises because He is faithful. His faithfulness is our portion, our inheritance. It is what we can cling to when everything else is uncertain.
D. God's faithfulness is also our protection. In a world that is constantly changing and full of uncertainty, God's faithfulness is our shield and fortress. It is what keeps us secure and gives us peace. When we are faced with challenges and difficulties, we can find refuge in the faithfulness of God. We can trust that He will never leave us nor forsake us, and that He will see us through every trial.
E. Finally, God's faithfulness is our source of strength and courage. Knowing that God is faithful gives us the courage to face our fears, to step out in faith, and to persevere in the face of adversity. It gives us the strength to keep going, even when the road is tough and the journey is long. It is the fuel that keeps our faith alive and burning brightly.
God's unfailing faithfulness is a multifaceted gem that shines brightly in every aspect of our lives. It is a truth that we can hold onto, a promise that we can rely on, a protection that we can hide in, and a source of strength that we can draw from. It is a beacon of hope in the darkest times, a song of joy in the saddest moments, and a declaration of victory in defeat.
