The Ten Commandments # 2

"Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image".

1. THE COMMAND OF THE LORD

"Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image...Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them". Roman Catholicism is riddled with graven images. Just think of the countless shrines to Mary. Then there is the nonsense of the weeping statues. False religions are also full of graven images. Just think of Buddhism.

2. THE CHARACTER OF THE LORD

"I the LORD thy God am a jealous God". He is jealous for us, not of us. This is a good, righteous jealousy. Christ displayed this kind of jealousy when He cleansed the temple (Matthew 21).

3. THE CONDUCT OF THE LORD

"Visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments". There is punishment for those who hate Christ but mercy for those who love Him.

Mercy there was great, and grace was free;

Pardon there was multiplied to me;

There my burdened soul found liberty,

At Calvary.
