GOOD FRIDAY: HOLY COMMUNION GUIDE
By Rev. Samuel Arimoro
Main Text:. Luke 22:19-20 (KJV)
“And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.
Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.”
INTRODUCTION:
Holy Communion, especially on Good Friday, is a sacred act of remembrance and worship. It is not a ritual but a powerful proclamation of the death of Christ and all it accomplished. As we partake, we remember His suffering, we honour His sacrifice, and we declare our faith in His finished work.
I. PURPOSE OF HOLY COMMUNION
To Remember the Sacrifice of Christ
“This do in remembrance of me” (1 Corinthians 11:24).
Communion is a time to reflect on Jesus’ body broken and His blood shed for us.
1. To Examine Ourselves
“Let a man examine himself...” (1 Corinthians 11:28).
We must come to the Lord’s Table with reverence and purity of heart.
2. To Proclaim His Death and Resurrection
“You proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes” (1 Corinthians 11:26).
We testify that Jesus died, rose again, and is coming back.
3. To Receive Grace and Strength
As we partake, the Holy Spirit renews us spiritually—healing, peace, and grace flow.
4. To Renew Our Covenant with God
Communion reminds us that we belong to Christ and are bound to live for Him.
II. THE ELEMENTS OF COMMUNION
1. THE BREAD – HIS BODY
Represents Jesus’ body that was broken for us (Isaiah 53:5).
“Take, eat: this is my body” (Matthew 26:26).
2. THE WINE – HIS BLOOD
Symbolises the blood of Jesus shed for the remission of our sins (Hebrews 9:22).
“Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament...” (Matthew 26:27-28).
III. ORDER OF COMMUNION SERVICE
1. Consecrate the Elements
Offer thanks to God for the bread and wine, asking Him to sanctify them for spiritual purposes.
2. Break the Bread and Share It
“This is my body which is broken for you...” (1 Corinthians 11:24).
3. Bless the Wine and Share It
“This cup is the new testament in my blood...” (1 Corinthians 11:25).
4. Moment of Reflection and Personal Prayer
Encourage all participants to silently thank the Lord, repent, and rededicate themselves.
IV. COMMUNION PRAYERS
1. Prayer Before the Bread:
Lord Jesus, thank You for Your body that was broken for me. As I eat this bread, I remember Your sacrifice and receive healing, peace, and strength in Jesus’ name.
2. Prayer Before the Wine:
Father, I thank You for the blood of Jesus that was shed for the forgiveness of my sins. As I drink this cup, I declare I am redeemed, justified, and cleansed. I receive grace to live holy and serve You all my days.
POST-COMMUNION DECLARATIONS
1. I am a partaker of the body and blood of Christ.
2. By His stripes, I am healed.
3. I walk in newness of life through the cross.
4. I am forgiven, redeemed, and restored.
