GOD’S PROMISE IN THE CHILD—I—Isaiah 9:6-7

Need:—To grasp the nature of why we celebrate Christmas & why the world gravitates away from this.

God’s promise of an end to oppression was contained in the birth of a child.

A promise to end sin’s oppression is contained in the birth of a child.

?How is God’s promise of an end to sin’s oppression, contained in the birth of a child?

8 ways God’s promise of an end to sin’s oppression is contained in the birth of a child.

1—The promise to end sin’s oppression is thru

A PERFECT GIFT(:6a-b)

—Explanation:(:6c, 7a-c)

:6—“For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; ...”

*Incarnation—God in flesh

“Unto us”

—For our sakes

—God’s people under oppression of sin(Deceived—govt., spiritual leadership, directives, society, etc.)

“Child”—dly yeled yeh’-led—Child, son, boy, offspring, youth.

—Immediate confirmation of the human nature of the coming Messiah. The One thru whom the yoke of oppression is broken(:3-4).

“Born”—dly yalad yaw-lad’—To bear, bring forth, beget, gender, travail.

—Not only conceived but born as any other person on earth.

“Son”—Nb ben bane—Son, grandson, child, member of a group.

“Given”—Ntn nathan naw-than’—Niphal—To be given, be bestowed, be provided, be entrusted to, be granted to, be permitted, be issued, be published, be uttered, be assigned—To be set, be put, be made, be inflicted.

—Argumentation:

Jn. 1:1-2, 14—“In the beginning was the Word, & the Word was with God, & the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.”....“And the Word became flesh & dwelt among us, & we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace & truth.”

Rom. 6:23—“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

2—The promise to end sin’s oppression is thru

A PERFECT GOVERNMENT(:6c, 7a-c)

—Explanation:(:6c, 7a-c)

:6c—“...And the government will be upon His shoulder...”

“Government”—hrsm misrah mis-raw’—Rule, dominion, government.

“Upon His shoulder”

—This Child/Son will Himself bear the weight of true government. He will oppose our oppressors. Their oppressive government will give way to His.

:7a—“Of the increase of His government & peace...”

“Increase”—hbrm marbeh mar-beh’—Abundace, increase

—This child’s government/dominion will overshadow all others & will be ubiquitous. It will reach into every corner of every person’s life.

“Government”—See :6—hrsm misrah mis-raw’—Rule, dominion, government.

“Peace”—See :6—Mwlv shalowm shaw-lome’—Completeness, soundness, welfare, peace.

—His peace will be ubiquitous, overshadowing all noise & blood fo war(9:5)

:7b—“There will be no end,...”

—Eternal

:7c—“Upon the throne of David & over His kingdom,...”

“Kingdom”—hklmm mamlakah mam-law-kaw’—Kingdom, dominion, reign, sovereignty.

—Argumentation:

Rom. 13:1-4—“Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, & the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, & those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, & you will have praise from the same. For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.”

—Obvious presence of sinfulness on the part of both govt. & citizen!

A PERFECT COUNSEL(:6d)

—Explanation:(:6d)

“...And His name will be called...”

“His name will be called”

—What He will be known/experienced as.

—What His character & actions reveal.

“...Wonderful, Counselor,...”

“Wonderful Counselor”—Uewy alp—

—“Wonderful”—alp pele’ peh’-leh—Wonder, marvel(extraordinary, a thing hard to understand).

—“Counselor”—Uey ya`ats yaw-ats’—To advise, consult, give counsel, counsel, purpose, devise, plan.

—This child will provide true counsel—direction, guidance, truth, etc. His counsel will be diffcult to grasp in that it will require one’s earnest seeking. He will speak deep truth in parables(Mat. 13:10-17)—powerful truth in highly personal, cerebral, pictoral sayings requiring faith to grasp completely.

Mat. 13:10-17—“And the disciples came & said to Him, “Why do You speak to them in parables?” He answered & said to them, “Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. “For whoever has, to him more will be given, & he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. “Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, & hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. “And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says: ‘Hearing you will hear & shall not understand, And seeing you will see & not perceive; For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest they should see with their eyes & hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts & turn, So that I should heal them.’ “But blessed are your eyes for they see, & your ears for they hear; “for assuredly, I say to you that many prophets & righteous men desired to see what you see, & did not see it, & to hear what you hear, & did not hear it.”
