Summary: God promised not to forsake His people, but as His people, we must be ready to walk in absolute obedience to His words to continually enjoy the promise.

God Will Never Leave You Nor Forsake You

Study Text: Hebrews 13:5 - 6

Introduction:

- We can be assured of God's promise that He would never leave us nor forsake us. So we can say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?"

- When God gave the promise to Jacob, it was for all-round application in his life. Genesis 28:15

- In our study text, the application of trusting God for our needs was singled out. This come with exhortation to:

1. Avoid covetousness in our lives

2. Be contempt with what God has given us.

- We will look at the promise as it applies generally to every aspect of our lives and walk with God, by considering three things:

1. The Promise: What it Means

2. The Promise: What it Needs

3. The Promise: What it Brings

1. The Promise: What it Means

- This promise does not mean an unconditional guarantee of His presence and support. It reveals His faithfulness and commitment to His words and covenant. Nehemiah 1:5

- There are many Biblical example to illustrate the meaning more clearly to us:

1. The case of Joshua: Joshua 1: 5 - 9

- The promise was given to him, but the covenant stands on the platform of complete obedience.

- When there was disobedience against His command, the covenant was broken and the people of God suffered dearly for it, until there was an amendment. Joshua 7: 2 - 12

2. The case of Samson: Judges 16: 18 - 21

- Samson was meant to be set apart for God all the days of his life. But he yielded to immoral living and lost the presence of God.

- So, this promise means that God will never from His own part, leave nor forsake His people, but His people must fulfill their own part of the covenant.

- Disobedience of His people to His clear instructions and guidance will annul the covenant and lead to a failed promise. Isaiah 1: 18 - 20

2. The Promise: What it Needs

- In receiving and enjoying the promises of God maximally in our lives, there are things expected from us to be committed to:

1. A strong confidence and faith in God and His Word.

- We need faith in who God is and what He has said. Hebrews 11:6

2. A consistent and fervent prayer life. James 5: 16

- We need to pray fervently for the fulfilment and performance of the word of God in our lives.

3. A complete obedience to His words and instructions: Deuteronomy 28:1 - 14

- We need to obey God's instructions totally, willingly and without questions.

4. A faithful commitment to the service of God

- We need to be faithful in witnessing for Him. Matthew 28:20

- We need to be faithful in various assignments and responsibilities in His Church. Ephesians 2: 8 - 10

5. A heartfelt worship and praises to His name: Matthew 15: 8

- We must not worship Him in deceits and hypocrisy, but in truth and in spirit.

3. The Promise: What it Brings

- When we do our part faithfully, God is always faithful and committed to the performance of His words in our lives.

- By virtue of the performance of this promise, several blessings are there for us to enjoy.

1. The Blessings of Divine Protection

- We will be protected from all forms evil in the physical and in the spiritual. Isaiah 54:17

2. The Blessings of Divine Provisions

- We will have all our needs met according to the riches of His glory. Philippians 4:19

3. The Blessings of Divine Power

- Our strength will be renewed regularly, and we will be empowered to accomplish all our responsibilities. Philippians 4:13

4. The Blessings of Divine Promotion

- The Lord will prosper us in all that we do and promote us in all aspects of life. Psalms 1:1-3

5. The Blessings of Divine Presence

- He will be with us always in every place we go and in everything we do to help us in times of need.

6. The Blessings of Divine Preservation

- The Lord will preserve us by His mercies, blameless body soul and spirit for His eternal kingdom.

Conclusion:

- As we receive understanding of His promise, we need to receive grace to be faithful in our own part of the covenant.

- God is always faithful to His words, and we can enjoy all His blessings maximally in this world and in His eternal kingdom.

- We don't have to worry; God's in charge. We should remember that the land lies before us and we are called to go in and possess it.
