GOD’S REBELLIOUS CHILDREN

Hebrews 10:26-31

Introduction:

For anyone who has more than 1 child, you understand how different each of them are. It seems like most families have at least one child that just tests your patience on a regular basis. Our rebellious child is Tyler. That’s why Tyler and Rose are going to have at least 1 child that causes Tyler’s hair to fall out like mine.

Unfortunately, God also has many children that are rebellious. Are you 1 of them? Our passage this morning is the 4th of 5 warnings found in Hebrews. This warning is written to Christians.

Hebrews 10:26-28 (NIV)

“If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.”

A rebellious child of God…

1. Deliberately keeps on sinning.

Now, this is a highly debated passage of Scripture. Some people would tell you that this talking about a non-saved person; but that is not true. Notice that this person has already received the knowledge of the truth. This person has made the decision to just do whatever they want to do, regardless of the fact that it is sin.

So, does the rebellious child of God in danger of losing their salvation? No; but they give a bad name to their Savior. Now, if you think that God is going to just let you be out of control all of the time without consequence, you have lost your mind. 1 of 2 things could happen: God could remove you from this Earth or He could allow you to live with those consequences every day. It says that this person should expect a judgment of fire. While some people believe that this is talking about Hell, it is actually talking about the Refiner’s Fire Judgment of Christians. This judgment will determine what from your life was worth keeping- Those things that were of God. For some, there will be nothing that survives the Refiner’s Fire.

We are blessed that we are under the New Covenant. Under the Law, if you deliberately sinned, you died. How many of us would have already been killed?

Hebrews 10:29-30 (NIV)

“How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know him who said, "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," and again, "The Lord will judge his people."

A rebellious child of God…

2. Is trampling Jesus under their feet.

Have you ever heard of a story where a building caught on fire and as everyone was running out of the building someone fell down and everyone trampled them to death? That is the illustration here of a disobedient child of God. Everything that salvation is about is treated like something that doesn’t matter. You are treating Jesus like He is a bug that needs to be smashed.

Do you think that God is just going to allow this to slide? God is going to judge us.

Hebrews 10:31 (NIV)

“It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”

A rebellious child of God…

3. Will fall into the hands of God.

Do you understand what that is saying? That is saying that God is going to put you into check. God disciplines you because He loves you.

Conclusion:

I am not trying to scare you or threaten you this morning. What I am doing, is pleading with you to get things right with the Lord. Why give up your peace and joy when you can repent and walk with Jesus in victory?
