INTRODUCTION:
Many view God only in the context of ancient history or spiritual rituals, but the Scripture declares clearly that He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. God is not distant, absent, or inactive—He is present and actively involved in the lives of His people. The reality of God's nature is that He gives life, sustains life, and restores life.
When Jesus addressed the Sadducees, He reminded them that God introduced Himself to Moses as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—patriarchs who had died long before Moses’ time. Yet Jesus said God was still their God, proving they were alive to Him. This shows us that in God, life is eternal and abundant.
Understanding that we serve the God of the living gives hope in hopeless situations, strength during trials, and faith that death is not the end. God specialises in raising dead things to life—be it dreams, relationships, or destinies.
1. GOD IS THE SOURCE AND SUSTAINER OF LIFE
Life begins and continues only because God wills it.
a) God Breathed Life Into Man (Genesis 2:7)
The breath of life came directly from God; He is our origin.
b) In Him We Live, Move, and Have Our Being (Acts 17:28)
Our daily existence is sustained by His power.
c) He Upholds All Things by His Word (Hebrews 1:3)
Creation is held together by the living Word of God.
d) Every Living Soul Belongs to God (Ezekiel 18:4)
All life belongs to Him, and He governs its course.
Biblical Example: Elijah and the widow’s son—God revived the dead boy, proving He is the God of the living (1 Kings 17:17-24).
2. GOD BRINGS LIFE OUT OF DEATH
He reverses hopelessness and gives new beginnings.
a) Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life (John 11:25-26)
Even those who die in Christ will live again.
b) The Dead Bones Shall Live Again (Ezekiel 37:5)
God speaks life into every dry, lifeless situation.
c) Death Has Lost Its Power Through Christ (Romans 6:9-11)
Christ conquered death to give us eternal life.
d) God Restores What Is Lost or Broken (Joel 2:25-26)
He redeems wasted years and brings purpose to pain.
Biblical Example: Lazarus was dead four days, but Jesus called him out of the grave alive (John 11:38-44).
3. THOSE WHO WALK WITH GOD NEVER DIE SPIRITUALLY
In God, death is not an end, but a transition.
a) To Be Absent from the Body Is to Be Present with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8)
The believer’s spirit remains alive in fellowship with God.
b) Eternal Life Begins Here and Now (John 5:24)
Faith in Christ transitions us from death to life.
c) God’s Covenant with Us Is Everlasting (Genesis 17:7)
God’s promises extend beyond the grave.
d) Our Names Are Written in the Book of Life (Philippians 4:3)
We are citizens of heaven, alive forever with Him.
Biblical Example: Enoch walked with God and was not found because God took him—he did not see death (Genesis 5:24).
4. GOD CALLS US TO LIVE ABUNDANTLY
His purpose is not just survival, but fulfilment.
a) Jesus Came to Give Abundant Life (John 10:10)
Life in Christ is rich, purposeful, and joyful.
b) We Are Called to Live for His Glory (1 Corinthians 10:31)
Our lives should reflect His power and purpose.
c) The Life of a Believer Is a Testimony to the Living God (Galatians 2:20)
Christ lives through us.
d) Believers Are the Living Epistles of God (2 Corinthians 3:2-3)
Our lives speak louder than words to a dying world.
Biblical Example: Paul the Apostle’s life after conversion was a testimony of divine transformation and abundant purpose (Acts 9:1-22).
CONCLUSION:
We serve the God of the living—a God who is active, powerful, and present. He breathes life where there is death, hope where there is despair, and revival where there is dryness. No situation is beyond His power to restore and revive.
Let us live as those who serve a living God, full of passion, faith, and purpose. Let our lives reflect His power, and may we always remember that in God, nothing is truly lost—because He is the God of the living.
