Plan for: Thanksgiving | Advent | Christmas
We all have names and are known by them. However, sometimes, our true selves are not reflected in these names. God, on the other hand, sees us for who we truly are. He calls us by our names, not as the world does. Zacchaeus was such a person, known by a name but seen differently by God.
We all have names by which people know us. Our names are a way for others to identify and recognize us. However, there are times when people fail to see us for who we truly are. But God sees us beyond our names; He sees our true selves. God calls us by our names, not as the world does. Zacchaeus was one such person who experienced this.
Zacchaeus was a man with a name, just like all of us. His name meant "Pure One." He was a Jew and held the position of Director of Tax Collectors, making him a wealthy and powerful individual. However, his occupation as a tax collector made him despised by his fellow Jews. Tax collectors were known for overtaxing their own people and collaborating with the Roman authorities. They were seen as traitors and sinners.
Despite his wealth and power, Zacchaeus had a deep desire to see Jesus. He had heard about Jesus' miracles and teachings, and he wanted to catch a glimpse of this man who was said to be the Savior of the Jewish people. However, due to his short stature and the large crowd surrounding Jesus, Zacchaeus couldn't see Him. Undeterred, he climbed a tree to get a better view.
As Jesus passed by the tree, He looked up and called Zacchaeus by name, saying, "Zacchaeus, come down! I must stay at your house today." This simple act of calling him by name showed that Jesus knew exactly where Zacchaeus was and who he was. Jesus saw beyond Zacchaeus' occupation and reputation; He saw the real person inside.
The people in the crowd, however, expressed their disapproval of Jesus' decision to dine at the house of a sinner like Zacchaeus. They couldn't understand why Jesus would associate with someone they considered unworthy. But Jesus saw beyond their judgment and recognized Zacchaeus' potential for transformation.
Zacchaeus, overwhelmed by Jesus' acceptance and recognition, gladly welcomed Him into his home. In the presence of Jesus, Zacchaeus experienced a change of heart. He repented of his sins and pledged to make amends for his wrongdoings. Zacchaeus' transformation revealed his true identity as a child of Abraham, a member of God's family.
Just as Jesus knew where Zacchaeus was hiding in the tree, He knows where we are in our lives. He sees our struggles, pain, and challenges. He knows our past and our present circumstances. Jesus calls out to us, inviting us to come down from our hiding places and allow Him into our lives.
When Jesus called Zacchaeus by name, He showed that He knew who Zacchaeus truly was. Jesus sees beyond our external appearances and reputations; He sees the potential within us. He knows the person we are meant to be. Jesus calls us to embrace our true identity and purpose.
Every person has a purpose in life. Jesus sees the potential within each one of us. He calls us to fulfill that purpose and live according to His plan. Our worth is not determined by what others think of us or by our past mistakes. Jesus sees our true value and invites us to live up to it.
Jesus is calling out to each one of us by name. He knows where we are, who we are, and the potential within us. He wants to have a personal relationship with us, to dine with us, and to guide us on our journey. Will we respond to His call? Will we come down from our hiding places and allow Him into our lives? Let us embrace the truth that Jesus knows our name and desires a deep and meaningful relationship with us.
