We are encouraged to sing a new song to the Lord. Why? God has done marvelous things, and He did them all by His right hand and holy arm, without human help. When we say something is marvelous, we mean it is remarkable, extraordinary, unforgettable, miraculous, etc.

Marvelous things call for new songs, acknowledging the beautiful things that God continues to do in our lives, families, and the church. No wonder God’s children usually sang new songs when God did mighty things in their lives. For instance,

• When God brought His people through the parted sea, Moses sang in Exodus 14:21-end; 15:1-18, “I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider1 he has thrown into the sea …”

• When God gave Hannah a baby boy – Samuel, she sang in 1 Samuel 2:1-8. She said in verse two, “There is none holy as the Lord: For there is none beside thee: Neither is there any frock like our God.”

98:2 - When you speak of marvelous things, the psalmist highlights God’s work of salvation as the utmost importance. He says, “The LORD has made known His salvation …” Brethren, salvation is marvelous and praiseworthy. Salvation includes (a) the salvation of our souls and (b) all the victories we enjoy, great and small, in our lives: God constantly delivers us from all kinds of troubles. This is marvelous.

? Have you been saved? It is a marvelous thing God has done for you. There is no one else who could do that for you. It was done through the perfect work of Jesus Christ on the cross. Hallelujah. This should make you always jump for joy, singing new songs of salvation. The day you were saved, the hosts of heaven rejoiced (Luke 15:7). How much more you who received redemption and salvation.

o It is marvelous how Jesus agreed to come to the world to suffer for you and me in the first place. It is amazing how the death of one person would give life to all mankind who believe. It is marvelous that Jesus went to the grave and removed dominion from death. He rose from death and lives forever, returning to receive His own any time soon. Have you thought of how His stripes bring healing to humankind? Is it not marvelous why He kept quiet when He was accused, just because of His intent to die for our salvation? Why did He not give up when the pain was too much? We did not even know Him as of the time that He was yielding His life for us. It is incredible why He would do all that for me; all I have to do is believe. This is marvelous.

o The psalmist in Psalm 107:1-2 says, “O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth forever. Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy;”

o There are some new songs that only the redeemed of the Lord can sing (Rev. 14:3); angels cannot sing them because they cannot understand the salvation process we pass through. This is marvelous. Halleluiah.

? Salvation also involves deliverance from difficult situations. How many complex issues have God delivered you from since you were born? Can you count them? That is what makes it marvelous.

98:2 – In the same verse two, we see another marvelous thing: God’s righteousness revealed to nations - “and revealed His righteousness to the nations.” The way God made His righteousness known to all is marvelous. 2 Cor. 5:21 says, “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” He did it on the cross for all to see. Oh, what a marvelous God. He made you right in Christ. You are now called the righteousness of God. Halleluiah.

98:3 says, “He hath remembered his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel: all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.” Have you read Psalm 136 lately? Open it and see how God shows His mercy to His creations.

In Job 5:9, Job says God is one “who does great things and unsearchable, marvelous things without number.” When thinking of some of the marvelous works of God, I think of newborn babies, how unique they are, how they grow, and how no one else on earth can ever be like them. The miracle of receiving a child in the womb happens during what God calls the time of life (Gen. 14:18) when a woman can conceive. Sarah’s cycle had stopped many years back, yet our marvelous God returned her time of life, and she brought forth Isaac at her ancient age.
