Summary: A Message of Hope from the Life of Joseph taken from Genesis 37 - 39

Instead of going through with taking Joseph’s life, his brothers pulled him out of the pit and sold him into Egyptian slavery.

As a slave, you learn to OBEY. You and I cannot possibly make it in this life without being obedient. Obedience is DISCIPLINE. (Oh…yall are not going to help me here.)

Nobody wants to talk about discipline. It’s a hard word. It’s a challenging word. Be it food, friendships, finance, or family….discipline in your life is tough.

Joseph was disciplined. He learned the value of OBEDIENCE. And when he found himself faced with the FLESHLY PRESSURES of Potiphar’s wife, he was able to say “NO” and leave out of her presence with her holding his jacket!

You may be “ENSLAVED” to something that seems impossible for you to get out of…but the Lord will pull you out. You must be OBEDIENT. You must DISCIPLINE yourself and say “NO” to some things. And God will get you out of your MESS.

5) Joseph’s 5th Mess – HIS REPUTATION WAS DAMAGED BY LIES

Genesis 39:13-19

13 When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house, 14 she called her household servants. "Look," she said to them, "this Hebrew has been brought to us to make sport of us! He came in here to sleep with me, but I screamed. 15 When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house." 16 She kept his cloak beside her until his master came home. 17 Then she told him this story: "That Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make sport of me. 18 But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house." 19 When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, "This is how your slave treated me," he burned with anger.

Joseph said “NO” to the temptation, but Potiphar’s wife opened her mouth and told lies….lies that caused Joseph more problems….lies that damaged his testimony and his reputation….lies that put him into prison.

But the Bible says, that Joseph was shown favor …Genesis 39:20-23

20 Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined. But while Joseph was there in the prison, 21 the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden. 22 So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there. 23 The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.

Listen friends… the Lord has the last say so.

You may have been lied about….your reputation may be at stake, but the Lord will watch over you.

He says, “Vengeance is mine..saith the Lord.”

Jesus says, “If you offend one of my little ones it is better that a millstone be tied around your neck and that you be cast into the depths of the sea.”

Joseph might have been a prisoner, but the Bible says the warden paid him no attention…..and the Lord was with Joseph.

I’m telling you “he is with you in your MESS.”
