Glorify Thy Name

Summary: Bringing glory to the name of the LORD Jesus Christ is our primary focus in this Christian life. We'll examine 7 biblical ways we can glorify His name in all we do.
"Glorify Thy Name"

Scripture:
"But Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified. 24 Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain. 25 He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor. 27 “Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.” 29 Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.” 30 Jesus answered and said, “This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake. 31 Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32 And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.”
"Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s."
I am convinced that when God speaks, not everyone wants to listen. Examine the sin in the world today. Examine this verse. People only hear what they want to hear. I pray our ears will be attentive to the Spirit’s call this morning. As Scripture reads throughout the Book of Revelation, “Let him who has an ear, hear what the Spirit saith.”
During our church service, we just sang “Glorify Thy Name.” We quite often sing songs that exalt the glory of the LORD like “To God be the Glory,” “Glory to His Name,” & “Revive Us Again: ‘Hallelujah! Thine the Glory!’”

What do these statements mean and how can we glorify our LORD and Savior?
Definitions:
The most common Hebrew word is “Kabod.” (remember Icabod? - the glory has departed) It turns out there are 17 different Hebrew terms in the Old Testament that are translated, Glory. Here are some their meanings:
- to be lifted up
- beauty or dignity
- one who creates beauty
- royal attire
- a protective covering
- an ornament or jewel
- vigor or strength
- to flash forth light
- to shine, pure and clear
But that’s not all … In the New Testament, the Greek word “doxa” is translated Glory. It has these meanings:
- worship
- to magnify
- drawing attention to someone
- of highest value
- brightness
- royal splendor
- perfection
No wonder it’s hard to pin that word down! It carries a world of meaning. That makes sense. It takes a word FULL of meaning to describe our Great God.
How Do We Glorify God?
A. We glorify God when we aim to be like Him.
- Illustration: my children putting on my police uniform.
- Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us… ~ Ephesians 5:1-2
B. We glorify God when we believe by faith in Him.
- Hebrews 11:6, “Without faith it is impossible to please Him.”
C. We glorify God when we bear fruit for Him.
D. We glorify God when we do all to please Him.
- Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. ~ 1 Corinthians 10:31
- Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord and not for people, 24 knowing that it is from the
Lord that you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve. ~ Colossians 3:23-24
E. We glorify God when we use our gifts for Him.
F. We glorify God when we rejoice in His sacrifice.
G. We glorify God when we Trust in His Perfect Word
- To believe in God is to trust His Word, and to trust His Word is to obey and follow it. Otherwise, we are putting ourselves above God, judging Him, and insisting that we can do better with our lives.
