SLIDE – Introduction

John 1:1-14

This passage is speaking of Jesus, the Second Person of the Trinity,

The Messiah, The promised one of God, The Lamb of God.

SLIDE

In the beginning (think Genesis 1:1) was the Word (Jesus), and the Word (Jesus) was with God, and the Word (Jesus) was God. The same (Jesus) was in the beginning with God (Father & Holy Spirit). All things were made by him (the Word, Jesus); and without him (the Word, Jesus) was not anything made (Genesis 1) that was made. In him (the Word, Jesus) was life; and the life was the light of men. SLIDE And the light (the Word, Jesus) shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same (John) came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light (the Word, Jesus), that all men through him (the Word, Jesus) might believe. He (John) was not that Light (the Word, Jesus), but (John) was sent to bear witness of that Light (the Word, Jesus). SLIDE That was the true Light (the Word, Jesus), which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He (the Word, Jesus) was in the world, and the world was made by him (the Word, Jesus), and the world knew him (the Word, Jesus) not. He (the Word, Jesus) came unto his own, and his (the Word, Jesus) own received him (the Word, Jesus) not. But as many as received him (the Word, Jesus), to them gave he (the Word, Jesus) power to become the sons of God, SLIDE even to them that believe on his (the Word, Jesus) name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word (the Word, Jesus) was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his (the Word, Jesus) glory, the glory as of the only begotten (the Word, Jesus) of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

SLIDE Given

Why are we “Given” anything?

Because we have a need, a payment, a judgment – which we cannot pay.

SLIDE Hebrews 9:22

"And almost all things are by the law purged with blood,

and without shedding of blood is no remission.”

SLIDE Ezekiel 18:4

“Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father,

so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.”

So God gives ….

God gives what we cannot provide, procure, invent, build, pay,

eliminate, satisfy, etc.

Giving is Grace

We are given Jesus Christ

God-Man, Perfect, Holy, Son of God, The Messiah, Our Sacrifice

SLIDE

John 1:29 is in response to the question from Isaac in Genesis 2:7-8

“And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering….”

SLIDE

John the Baptist answered Isaac’s question in John 1:29

“The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith,

Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”

Trick Question – Why was Jesus Given?

The Word, Jesus Christ was GIVEN to us and for us

We needed and need what ONLY He could provide for us

SLIDE Buried

Jesus was given, to shed the blood that was required

Jesus was given, to die the death that was required

SLIDE John 19:30-31

“When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodied should not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath day, SLIDE (for that Sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.”

SLIDE John 19:32-33

“Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.” But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:”

SLIDE John 19:38-42

“And after this Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus. SLIDE And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury. SLIDE Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulcher, wherein was never man yet laid. There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulcher was nigh at hand.”
