Summary: Concluding our series, "Give Us This Day", examines Jesus's very clear teachings in Capernaum. His word is simple: Unless you do the things He told us to do, we will have no part of what He offers - which is eternal life!

John, Part 26

Series: Give Us This Day, Part 5

Focus: John 6:41-59

Concluding series in John: “Give Us This Day”

Next week begins new series (walking in John): “Discipleship Will Cost You”

Purpose: To examine the command (of discipleship) to follow Him (obediently)

FOCUS: The application of our belief is what can/will help us live faithfully!

Great benefit in God’s Word being read over you … Read John 6:22-59 / Pray

Focus for today is verses 41-59 SETUP:

• Man has a deep hunger for physical AND spiritual food

• Most of our time and energy is spent trying to satisfy this craving

• APP: Recognizing it exists must be the focus of our submission to Him

• DEEPER: Until we realize this truth, we cannot grow in His knowledge

Dialogue here between Jesus and congregation of the religious & disciples

• What is required of us? To Believe – v29

• God gives an open invitation to anyone who hears – v37a

• Jesus promises that none who come will be rejected – v37b

• This is found in His purpose which is to do God’s will – v38

• For our clarity: Jesus declares what the will of God is (lose none!) – v39

• What is the reward for belief? Security of Life! – v40

KEY: If we won’t believe (v29), none of this is applied to you (IF / THEN)

1. The People’s Complaint

People being people – grumbling over everything they disprove of vv41-42

Know their intent: To disrupt the truth being taught to them (don’t want change)

Why? Desired to do our own thing – wanted to find an excuse not to believe

We do this all the time: it takes more faith to be an atheist than a believer! EXP

People even called on Mary & Joseph as their proof that He is “just a man”

BUT!! What they don’t understand is who is indwelling this “man” before them!

John 1:1 John 1:14 BIG Question: How did He do this? Philippians 2:6-9

2. SEE: The Reality of Coming to Jesus

First off, “Stop Complaining!” Greek: gogguzó; grumble, muttering, murmuring

TOUGH: The one thing we do well: Complain! Jesus has had enough of it …

We do this especially well when anything disrupts what we want EXP

Truth: No one comes to Jesus unless the Spirit draws Greek: helkó; be dragged

What are we dragged by? The Spirit of God given to this world (as a promise)!

APP: That tug in your heart; the knowledge between sin & grace; that is Him!

What we must do is STOP shutting Him out and submit to Him! Be welcomed in!

Today is not promised, neither is tomorrow – right now is the time to respond!

BONUS: Jesus even promises we’ll be taught if we’ll follow and listen v45

He is actually quoting Isaiah 54:13 – the implication is that we need teaching!

This is why the reality of Him coming appears so jarring to our desires/wants

What if He returned today to take His bride home … are you ready? EXP

3. (Understand) Truth # 1: Eternity is Promised

Jesus tells them the truth v47 for clarity; to change focus (thinking cannibalism)

What their ancestors had v49 was enough for a day but it didn’t sustain them

Eternity is promised v50 to those who eat this bread – given from Heaven!

RE: Communion: tearing of bread – breaking of His Body for our sins v51a

Is this not what Jesus did for us? Was His body not broken for you and me?

Jesus offers living bread that gives them eternal life v51b; if we will accept it

Humanity turned into something grotesque; His act is beautiful – it is salvation!

4. (Realize) Truth # 2: We must Receive

TWICE: “I tell you the truth”; KJV, “Verily”; Greek: amén; truly, yes

Yes, what? Unless you do these things, you will have no part of what I offer

OFFER: Eternal life promised v54 for anyone who believes and follows Him

He is the purest food that we could ever need v55 if we will receive it

Look at the warning in v58 about relying on old bread (re-read v58)

DEEPER: Yesterday’s bread is no good – you need today’s nourishment EXP

IF we will partake in what He offers, then life eternal will be granted to us EXP
