Summary: Requesting a Ministry from God! What would God have me do? When can I ask for a Ministry?

GIVE ME THIS MOUNTAIN (Joshua 14:6-15)

1. HEBRON IS THE MOUNTAIN (Hebron: Society or Friendship)

2. CALEB IS THE MAN (Caleb: Dog, Crow, Basket)

3. GOD WILL MAKE MANIFEST

Caleb's request is, "Give me this mountain," or Hebron, because it was formerly in God's promise to him, and he would let Israel knows how much he valued the promise.

Those who live by faith value that which is given by God's promise, far above what is given by his providence only.

It was now in the Anakims' possession, and Caleb would let Israel know how little he feared the enemy, and that he would encourage them to push on their conquests.

Caleb answered to his name, which signifies "all heart."

Hebron was settled on Caleb and his heirs, because he wholly followed the Lord God of Israel.

HAPPY ARE WE IF WE FOLLOW HIM.

WHEN DO WE ASK FOR THE MOUNTAIN?

I. CONVINCING TIMES: WHEN WE ARE CONVINCED GOD WANTS US TO HAVE IT CONVINCE: To persuade or satisfy the mind by evidence; to subdue the opposition of the mind to truth, or to what is alleged, and compel it to yield its assent.

A. CONVINCE THE SAVED--Titus 1:9 Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and TO CONVINCE the gainsayers.

B. CONVINCE THE SINNERS--Jude 1:15 To execute judgment upon all, and TO CONVINCE all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.

C. CONVINCE THE SERVING--Acts 18:28 For he mightily CONVINCED the Jews, and that publicly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ.

ILLUSTRATE: Dr. Karl Menninger, the famed psychiatrist, once said that if he "could CONVINCE the patients in psychiatric hospitals that their sins were forgiven, 75 percent of them could walk out the next day."

John Newton wrote to a young minister advising that God leads his people through distresses, including a sense of their sinfulness. And His purpose? To: ’…preserve in you a due sense of your own unworthiness, and TO CONVINCE you that your ability, your acceptance, and your usefulness depend on a power beyond your own.’

II. CONSECRATED TIMES: WHEN WE ARE DILIGENTLY FOLLOWING THE LORD ALL OUR LIVES CONSECRATED: Made sacred by ceremonies; Devoted or dedicated to the service and worship of God.

A. CONSECRATED MINISTERS--Leviticus 21:10 And he that is the high priest among his brethren, upon whose head the anointing oil was poured, and that is CONSECRATED to put on the garments, shall not uncover his head, nor rend his clothes;

B. CONSECRATED MASTER--Hebrews 7:28 For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is CONSECRATED for evermore.

C. CONSECRATED MAP--Hebrews 10:20 By a new and living way, which he hath CONSECRATED for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;

Illustrate: "Let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage, and let us re-consecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain."

III. COMMITTED TIMES: WHEN WE ARE WILLING TO PAY THE PRICE COMMITTED--Delivered in trust; given in charge; deposited; imprisoned; done; perpetrate; engaged; exposed; referred to a committee.

A. COMMITTED WORD--Romans 3:2 Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were COMMITTED the oracles of God.

B. COMMITTED WORK--1 Corinthians 9:17 For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is COMMITTED unto me.

C. COMMITTED WHOLE--2 Timothy 1:12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have COMMITTED unto him against that day.

ILLUSTRATE: A chicken and a pig were walking past a church building one day when they noticed the Sunday morning sermon posted on the outside bulletin board, "Helping the Poor." They walked away when the chicken suddenly came across with a suggestion. "Brother pig, why don’t we give all the poor people a nice breakfast of ham and eggs?" The pig thought a moment and replied, "That’s all right for you to say because for you it is only a contribution, but for me, it’s total commitment!"
