TEXT: 1Corinthians 12:1-12

INTRODUCTION:

When it comes to the gifts of the Spirit, you don’t have them when you are born into this world. You must first be born again-2 cor 5:17 and receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit – Acts 2:4. It is the Holy Spirit that gives the gifts to Christians as He wills.

The following are called the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit:

(A) REVELATIONAL GIFTS

1) Word of Knowledge- Acts 10:9-19, Acts 9:11-14, 1cor 12:8, Col 2:2-3, 1 Samuel 10:22-24

This is the supernatural revelation by the Holy Spirit of certain facts in the mind of God. It is a spiritual ability that reveals knowledge of the past or present. God reveals certain information to us as He is All-knowing God; Omniscience. Therefore, It is not “gift of knowledge” but “word of knowledge”.

2) Word of Wisdom- 1 cor 12:8, Acts 27:23-24, Acts 21:10-13, 2Kings 20:1,5-6, Acts 6:3,10

This is the supernatural ability that imparts certain facts about the future to man. It provides solutions or “a way out”. It is also the divine ability to understand the purpose and plan of God and to bring clarity to situations and circumstances. This works together with the word of knowledge.

3) Discerning of spirit- Acts 16:16-19, Acts 5:1-11, Matt 16:21-23, Exodus 33:20-23

This is the divine ability to spiritually identify falsehood, to distinguish between right and wrong motives and the spiritual forces at work. To discern means to perceive by seeing or hearing or feeling. To have insight into the spirit world, 1 Cor 12:10, 1 John 4:1-6

(B) THE POWER/ACTION/DOING GIFTS

4) Gift of Faith- 1 cor 12:9, Mark 4:38, Dan 6:23, 1Kings 17:1

Every believer has a general faith or saving faith which is also a gift- Eph 2:8, Rom 10:17 but it is different from the special gift of faith. It is divine ability to believe in God for unseen supernatural results in every arena of life- Acts 11:22-24, it is imparted to receive miracles. The wonder-working faith.

5) The working of miracles- 2kings 2:14, John 2:7-11, 1 Cor 12:7-11

A miracle can be defined as a supernatural intervention by God in the ordinary course of nature. 1 Kings 17:8-16, John 6:5-14. The gift of working of miracles is the divine ability that does, commands or works miracles.

6) The gifts of Healings- 1 Cor 12:9,28,30, Mark 3:14-15

There is healing based on our faith in the word of God- 1Pet 2:24, there is also the healing by the ability and power of God imparted on a man-the gift of Healings- Isaiah 10:27, Mark 5:25-34

(C) THE GIFT OF UTTERANCE/VOCAL GIFTS

7) Gift of Prophecy- Acts 21:8-11, 1 Cor 14:1,5,39

The gift of prophecy is for edification, exhortation and comfort- 1 Cor 14:3. This is the divine ability to communicate God’s truth and heart in a way that calls people to a right relationship with God- Acts 2:37-40, 1 thess 1:5.

8) Gift of divers kinds of tongues- 1 Cor 12:10, 1Cor 14:1-14

This is the divine ability to pray or prophesy in a heavenly language to encourage (edify) your spirit and the body of Christ in a deep communion with God.

9) Gift of interpretation of tongues- 1 Cor 14:26,33, 1 Cor 14:1-13

This is the ability to interpret the gift of tongues. It is not “translating” but “interpreting”. This is a grace giving by the Holy Spirit to believers and it is not by man’s ability. It also operates as the Spirit wills.

Note: Prophecy is a supernatural utterance in a known tongue while the gift of divers kinds of tongues is a supernatural utterance in an unknown tongue.

SUMMARY- “But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the profit of all”- 1Cor 12:7 (NHEB)
