Message Point: Jesus labors in prayer for us.
Focus Passage: Matthew 26:36-46
Supplemental Passage: Who will bring a charge against God's elect? God is the one who justifies; who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. (Romans 8:33-34 NASB)
Introduction:
I. Disciples Sleeping
a. Jesus told the disciples to wait while he prayed
b. He took Peter, James & John ahead with him and asked them to keep watch and pray for Him
c. They did neither; they fell asleep
d. Jesus found them asleep at total of three times
e. If we aren’t careful, we’ll be just like the disciples; asleep instead of praying and doing what we were told to do.
II. Jesus Submitting
a. Jesus prayed for strength
b. Jesus prayed for another way
c. Luke 22:43-44 tells of an angel coming to strengthen and that Jesus agonized so much that He sweat blood
d. Jesus submitted to the will of the Father
III. Judas Subverting
a. All the while of these happenings, Judas was out making arrangements with the Sanhedrin to betray Jesus
b. He was not there to pray with Him, to strengthen Him, or to encourage Him. He was in it for the money.
c. If we aren’t careful, we’ll be just like Judas; while the ministry is going on, we’ll be out making our own plans.
