Summary: God wants you to use your imagination to solidify His promises to you and to bring glory to His Name.

After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward. And Abram said, Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus? And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir. And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir. And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness. And he said unto him, I am the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it. Genesis 15:1-7 KJV

We have often heard Abraham called the father of faith. He was called to walk in faith,

It was a long journey physically but it was also an eternal journey!

It was a journey into the physical unknown but into the eternal known!

It was a journey with physical people but a walk with the Eternal God!

He went out not knowing where he was going but he knew Who would take him there!

He was not interested in setting down a permanent foundation for he was looking for a city with foundations built by God

Abraham reached the sublime peak of faith where everything was surrendered to God even the son of God’s promise, Isaac! Before Abraham reached this peak of faith’s sublimity he had a lot of climbing to do and he stumbled a lot on the way. What is important however is that he kept on going despite his setbacks and stumbling! He never ceased to look for that which God had promised Him and he earned God’s commendation, being called the friend of God!

And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. James 2:23 KJV

Art not thou our God, who didst drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend for ever? 2 Chronicles 20:7 KJV

We look at the beginning of Genesis 12:1-2 Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:

We find it says God had said! So we backtrack to Genesis 11 and find:

But Sarai was barren; she had no child. And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there. And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran. Genesis 11:30-32 KJV

So God had told Abraham to get out from country, kindred and father’s house for a long and lonely journey but Abraham took his father and nephew. Stephen clarified this for us: And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran, And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee. Then came he out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell. Acts 7:2-4 KJV

As we look through Abraham’s life we find one constant. He believes God but still has to learn lessons along the way about the means, might and methods of God!

In Genesis 12 Abraham in trying to preserve his own life is willing to give away and pimp out Sarah. He was probably thinking that, after all God will make me a great nation and Sarah is barren. I love my wife but she may not be in the grand scheme of things so she may be dispensable! You think maybe?

Another question or two: Why did Abraham bring Lot with him? Did he knowing Sarah being barren think Lot may be the solution? Was it God who orchestrated the separation?
