Genesis Sermon 2: Origin Of Time

A. INTRODUCTION: GENESIS 1: 1,2

1.Time is the sequence of events. God created time when He began the first event.

2. Two great forces

a. Laws from God

b. Chaos from sin

"In the beginning God created the heaven(s) and the earth. And the earth was without form and void: and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters" (Genesis 1:1,2).

B. BEGINNING MOVEMENT

1. And. All verses begin with "And" (except verse 1, 27) showing sequence and chronology. Each action follows directly after the preceding action.

2. Was. The gap theorists translate it "became," all others "was."

3. Without form and void. Tohu waw bohu. The gap theorists translate them "ruined and destroyed." As though God destroyed His first creation. Rather this was the way God created it.

Tohu = "nothing" and Bohu = "emptiness."

4. Darkness was upon the face of the deep. "I form the light, and create darkness" (Isa. 45:7). Light, a form of energy was not yet created. Darkness is the absence of light. "I (Christ) was set up from everlasting to everlasting from the beginning . . . When there were no depths, I was brought forth . . . when he prepared the heavens, I was there, when he set a compass (sphericity) upon the face of the depth" (Prov. 8:23-27).

5. Face. Means presence.

6. The Spirit of God. First mention of 3rd person in Trinity. "All things were made by Him" (John 1:3) 2nd person of the Trinity. "God that made the world" (Acts 17:24) 1st person. Ruach also translated wind or breath.

7. Moved. Rachaph means "moves," "hovers," "flutters," that implies back and forth motion i.e., vibrated. Some think this is the beginning of light waves, heat waves, and sound waves.

Only two fundamental forces i.e., gravitational forces and electromagnetic forces, (except atomic forces which change matter itself). Energy cannot create itself.

"An outflowing energy from God’s Spirit began to flow and permeate the cosmos, gravitational forces were activated and water and earth particles came together to form a great sphere moving through space . . . The compass on the face of the deep, and the formless earth assumed the beautiful form of a perfect sphere." Henry Morris

C. BEGINNING OF LIGHT

"And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness He call Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day" (Gen. 1:3-5).

1. Let there be light. First recorded words of God. God gave the earth movement, now He gives it light. Light holders (luminaries) were created on day four, this is cosmic light i.e., the essence of light.

a. "God is light and in Him is no darkness at all" (I John 1:5).

b. "For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God" (II Cor. 4:6).

c. Darkness was not removed, only separated.

d. Day was the "light times" when God did His work, the darkness was the "night time" when God did no work.

Example Stewardship

e. The "Light-Dark" arrangement clearly meant the earth was now rotating on its axis i.e., a source of light on one side.

D. BEGINNING OF SEASONS

"And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:"

(v.14). And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also" (v.16).

1. Let there be lights. (v.14) First light (light waves), three generators of light (sun, moon, stars).

2. Light trail. Takes billion of years for light to travel from stars to us. The light trail was created in transit. (Stars have not changed since observation, except for nova or supernova that heat up or explodes). Why would God create nova in transit?

3. Identical. Duration of light and night were the same "Divide."

4. Signs OTH, prediction of things to come.

Seasons MOED, the appointments of time.

a. Twenty four hour day, earth revolves on axis.

b. Moon revolves around earth.

c. Lunar cycle (full moon etc.)

d. Solar cycle, repeating every 365 days.

e. Seven day week.

f. Eclipse cycle of 18 years and 11 days.

5. And the Lord saw that it was good. A time when nothing in any planet, star or heavenly body was out of place, in conflict, or catastrophic in any way.
