Summary: What’s the big deal with marrying unbelievers? Well, don’t be too quick in thinking it is not a big deal! The Bible addresses the idea of separation of believers all the way through. Genesis 6 seems to introduce the topic.

Genesis 6 - Part 4 - What’s so bad about believers marrying unbelievers?

In this passage we see mutations such as giantism. We see great evil on the face of the earth. Perhaps these big guys were even worshiped as gods (I think we have established that they weren’t aliens earlier on).

I suggested that Genesis 6 1-4 speaks of believers (sons of God) who married unbelievers (daughters of men) and had children who not only watered down their faith but increased in wickedness. How do I get that? Well the next verse goes on to say that the Lord "saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually." The passage seems to be linking this wickedness on the earth at that time with the intermarriage of believers with unbelievers.

What’s the big deal with marrying unbelievers? Well, don’t be too quick in thinking the idea of marrying unbelievers is not a big deal, and has grave implications for your life! In fact the Bible addresses the idea of separating ourselves from unbelievers all the way through - being in the world but not of the world.

It all seems to relate to the principle of not being unequally yoked when you marry someone. The picture comes from farming life. Oxen and mules don’t work well together. They will pull a load differently, so if you put them in the same harness, they’ll be very ineffective. Obviously we are not to be "unequally yoked" in terms of incestuous relationships today which cause birth defects, but the Bible just as clearly says "don’t be unequally yoked" in terms of marrying unbelievers, which causes spiritual defects.

The NLT puts it this way...

"Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can goodness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? What harmony can there be between Christ and the Devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever?" (2 Cor. 6:14 15 NLT)

God bless you Church for sticking with me through these verses. I am enjoying your company and your forebearance. May God bless you as you seek to live in the world but not of the world, and to draw upon the power of the Holy Spirit to understand how this passage applies to you. But what about the rest of Genesis 6 which talks about the flood.
