Trusting Jesus brings peace amid life’s storms, as He prepares a true home for us and invites us to reflect His welcoming love to others.

Introduction

If you’ve ever come home on a rainy night, you know the relief of a porch light and a door that opens. Shoes squeak, coat drips, and someone says, "You’re here. Sit down. You’re safe." Isn’t it something how a house can feel like a hug? Smells of supper in the air, a chair pulled out just for you, your name spoken with warmth. That’s what welcome sounds like.

Jesus knows that feeling matters. He knows storms rattle us. He sees the questions that chase sleep away. He hears the sigh before the sentence. And into a room of worried friends, He doesn’t offer a lecture; He offers a promise. A house. A home. A place prepared.

Some of you today carry a weariness that weighs more than you planned. Some carry grief that sneaks up like a tide. Some carry fear that shouts louder than faith. Hear the tender tone of your Savior: "Let not your hearts be troubled." Can you imagine His eyes as He says it? Not scolding. Steady. Kind. Capable. He speaks as One who can back every promise with nail-scarred hands.

Martyn Lloyd-Jones once said, "Faith is the refusal to panic." That’s not a call to pretend. It’s an invitation to trust a Person. Faith doesn’t deny the waves; it clings to the One who walks on them. Faith isn’t a flimsy feeling; it’s a firm handhold in a faithful Savior.

This is why John 14 is such a gentle gift. Jesus says there is a real house with real rooms in His Father’s home. Not a cold closet. Not a spare corner. A place, planned and prepared, with your name on it. He isn’t just pointing the way; He promises to come and get us, to bring us to Himself. Not merely a mattress—His presence.

And can I tell you something that makes me smile? When I think of a house with many rooms, I think of Bonnie. The open door. The extra seat. The pot that stretches to feed one more. The way she handed out warmth like it was bread fresh from the oven. Her hospitality was more than good manners; it was a mirror of God’s heart. In her welcome, we caught a whisper of heaven’s welcome. In her table, we saw a hint of the Father’s table. In her care, we felt the kindness of Christ.

So today, as we read these words, let them wash over your worries. Christ prepares a home for us. Faith can steady a trembling heart. And the way Bonnie lived—her open door, her ready table—points us to a God who loves to make room for His children. If you’re tired, come and rest a while in this promise. If you’re anxious, let Jesus speak peace into your chest. If you’re wondering how to get home, hear Him say, "I am the way."

Quote: "Faith is the refusal to panic." — Martyn Lloyd-Jones

Scripture Reading: John 14:1-6 (ESV) 1 "Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4 And you know the way to where I am going." 5 Thomas said to him, "Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?" 6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

Opening Prayer: Father, thank You for the kindness of Christ and the comfort of Your Word. Our hearts confess their worries, and we bring them to You. Speak peace to us through Your Spirit. Help us trust Your Son who prepares a place for us and promises to bring us home. Steady our thoughts, calm our fears, and lift our eyes to Jesus—the way, the truth, and the life. For those who grieve, give grace. For those who feel alone, give the assurance of Your nearness. Teach us to open our doors and our hearts as Bonnie did, reflecting Your care to everyone You send our way. Make our homes little billboards of Your big welcome. We ask this in the strong and gentle name of Jesus. Amen.

Christ prepares a home for us

Hope swells when a promise is clear. Jesus gives that kind of promise. He speaks about a real place. He speaks with care. He speaks to real people who need rest.

This is family talk. He uses family words. Father. House. Place. He reaches for a picture we can hold.

He also speaks with action. He goes. He prepares. He comes again. Every verb carries love.

"In my Father’s house are many rooms." Those words tell us about size and safety. A house means steadiness. Rooms mean settled life. This is not a camp that moves and fades away. This is home life with the Father. The rooms are many. So there is no squeeze. No scramble for space. No fear of running out. The word Father matters. The home belongs to Him. He is not a landlord who keeps distance. He is near. He knows each child. He brings them all the way in. The Son speaks about this house like someone who has lived there forever. He knows what is inside. He knows how good it is. He speaks so the thought of it can soften tight shoulders and slow fast breathing. The picture is simple. Family together. Doors open. Lights on. Long-term care.

"I go to prepare a place for you." Preparation means purpose. Jesus is not guessing. He is not unsure. He sets things in order for us. He does this through His work on the cross and His rising again. He clears the way with His own life. He then goes to the Father and speaks for us. He makes our welcome sure. Think of the detail in that word prepare. It means He thinks of what we need. He plans for our arrival. He arranges all that would keep us out. He bears the cost. He signs the papers with His blood. He makes access real and right. So when a believer thinks about the future, the thought does not hang in a fog. It has shape. It has address. It has certainty because His work is finished and His care is ongoing.

"I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also." Presence is the heart of the promise. He does not send a map. He does not wave from far away. He comes. He takes. He brings us to Himself. The aim is life with Him. The words to myself change everything. Heaven is good because He is there. The best part is being with the One who loves without fail. Think of how kind this is. The Son who moved toward us in His first coming will move toward us again. He is not late. He is not distracted. He keeps time well. He knows how to guide each saint through death or through His return. No believer will be lost in the handoff. No one will miss the way. He holds our future as firmly as He held the cross. He will bring His people to the place He has made ready, and He will do it with His own arm.

"I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." These words answer Thomas and also answer our age. The way is a Person. The truth is a Person. The life is a Person. Access to the Father is real and clear in Jesus. Trust rests there. We are not left to build our own stairs. We are not left to guess. We are not left to make truth for ourselves. We come through Him. He carries us on what He has done and who He is. He is reliable. He cannot fail. So hearts can lean hard on Him. When questions rise, these words stand. When days are long, these words hold. When the last breath comes, these words lead. The Father is the goal. The Son is the way. The Spirit makes it live in us as we believe.
