Summary: When we need help, hope, and safety, we need a foxhole. David needs a place to hide from the enemy a fox hole to hide in.

“Foxholes” Psalm 27:1-9

1. What is a foxhole Foxholes are fox holes where real foxes live , "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head."

• They are small holes a human could never fit into a foxhole

• Typically they are 4inches in diameter, found near the base of a tree

• Foxholes are places where foxes store their food, they raise their babies, they duck into a foxhole to escape a predator

2. We have Foxholes during war time and in the day of trouble

• Foxholes were dug out by soldiers to avoid or hide from the enemy

• Foxholes were used for shelter and safety during battle

• David share with us he needed a foxhole 2When evil men advance against me to devour my flesh,A when my enemies and my foes attack me,

• David feel he may need a foxhole 3Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then will I be confident

• David says in the Day of Trouble God gives him a foxhole5For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle and set me high upon a rock.

3. When We face enemies as well we need to remember God is likened to a Foxhole

• We face enemies such as shootings, identity theft, cancers, threats to our children, having enough money to retire, cost medical services, cost of living

• David faces issues we face at times he is ill. At times he is repentant and longing for forgiveness and a fresh start. Sometimes David asks God to destroy his foes. Other times he is at peace and relaxed.

• Remember my friend God is like foxholes hear how David describes the Foxhole: 1The LORD is my light and my salvation- whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life--

4. David Needed a Foxhole at times because of His enemy Saul

• Saul tried to pin David to a wall with a spear a few times (1 Samuel 18:10-11, 1 Samuel 19:10).

• He also devised a plan to have David killed in a battle (18:25), unsuccessfully

• Saul just commanded his men to kill David, but with the help of both his wife Michal (Saul’s daughter) and Jonathan (Saul’s son), David manages to escape.

• David spent years running and his men as nomadic people because of the hunt of King Saul

5. David found His Happy Place in The foxhole where God is

• David was most happy in the presence of God and most unhappy when distant from God

• David had enough life experience to know that it was in his best interest to be close to God, and to keep God at hand as his closest advisor and protector.

• 4David said, , this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD

• David didn’t always live at the foot of the cross Psalm 51 tells us He begged God Have mercy on me, blot out my transgressions. 2Wash away all my iniquity, my sin is always before me. 7Cleanse me 8Let me hear joy and gladness; 9Hide your face from my sins 10Create in me a pure heart, 11Do not cast me away

6. Remember friends when the enemy rages there will be a foxhole

• David found a Foxhole it was a cleft in the rock David sought a cave or a cleft in the mountains for safety. Why? “For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; (v. 5)

• Sometime the Foxhole was a Cave God said, “I hid a hundred prophets of the Lord by fifties in a cave, and provided them with bread and water? He hid these prophets from Jezebel

• Foxholes was the Red Sea or just a pile of water Israelites crossing the Red Sea 13Moses said, The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. 14The LORD will fight for you The waters were divided, the Israelites went through on dry ground The Egyptians pursued them, 28The water flowed back and covered the chariots and horsemen--the entire army of Pharaoh that had followed the Israelites into the sea. Not one of them survive

• Finally Foxholes offer safety, shelter, a place to Hide from the enemy, a place of presence It’s a place that lessens fear for God is with us in the foxhole
