Plan for: Thanksgiving | Advent | Christmas
This sermon simplifies the process of serving God into four easy steps: 1. Cultivating a mindset of service. 2. Being determined to serve. 3. Making a commitment to follow God. 4. Serving in your current circumstances.
If I were to ask you, "What is the simplest definition of a Christian?" what would you say? The answer is being a follower of Christ. In the book of Matthew, Jesus called His disciples to follow Him, and this call extends to all believers. To be a successful follower of Christ means becoming a servant. In John 12:26, Jesus refers to His followers as servants and emphasizes the importance of serving Him. So, how can we become successful servants of God? Here are four steps to guide us on this journey.
The first step in becoming a successful servant is to cultivate a mindset that recognizes our purpose on this earth is to serve God. We must shift our thinking from being self-centered to Christ-centered. It's crucial to understand that God is in charge, and our lives should revolve around serving Him. We should be willing to give our time, resources, energy, money, and expertise to glorify God. Jesus is the center of a servant's actions and motives, and our ultimate goal should be to please Him.
Having a servant mentality is not enough; we must also be determined to serve. We should be willing to help others and meet their needs. In 2 Corinthians 8:1-4, we see the example of the churches in Macedonia who, despite their own affliction and poverty, gave generously and sacrificially. They were determined to help others. As successful servants, we should have the same determination to give of our time, energy, and resources for the benefit of others.
To become successful servants, we must commit ourselves to follow God wholeheartedly. This means trusting Him, obeying His Word, and taking risks in faith. We should trust that God is in control and that His plans are perfect. In James 1:22, we are reminded to be doers of the Word, not just hearers. Following God involves not only listening to His teachings but also putting them into practice. It requires us to step out in faith and take action according to His guidance.
Many people wait for the right time or place to start serving, but the truth is, the right time to serve is now, and the right place to serve is where you are. We don't have to go far to find opportunities to serve others. In Matthew 25:31-46, Jesus teaches that serving others is equivalent to serving Him. We should be attentive to the needs of those around us and be willing to help in any way we can. Successful servants serve right where they are, making a difference in their immediate surroundings.
Becoming a successful servant of God requires developing a servant mentality, having a determination to serve, committing to follow God, and serving where we are. As we embrace these steps, we align ourselves with God's purpose for our lives and bring glory to Him. May we all strive to hear Jesus say, "Well done, good and faithful servant," as we faithfully serve Him and others.
