Introduction

Welcome, beloved family of God, to this sacred gathering where we come together, not just as individuals, but as a community bound by the unbreakable thread of faith. As we gather here today, we are reminded of the timeless words of Charles Spurgeon who once said, "Visit many good books, but live in the Bible." This profound insight serves as a compass, guiding us to the source of our faith, the Holy Bible, the living and active Word of God.

Today, we are going to focus our hearts and minds on a particular passage from the book of Nehemiah, a book that tells us a story of restoration, renewal, and revival. Let's turn our Bibles to Nehemiah 8:1-12.

Battling Biblical Illiteracy

In our world today, we find ourselves in a predicament. We are surrounded by a wealth of information, yet we are starving for wisdom. We have access to countless resources, yet we often neglect the most important one - the Bible. We have become a people who are familiar with the stories of the Bible, but not its teachings. We know the characters, but not the Author. We can quote verses, but we struggle to live them out. This is a problem that we must address, for it is only through the Word of God that we can truly know God and His will for us.

The first aspect we need to consider is our attitude towards the Bible. Many of us view the Bible as a book of rules, a list of do's and don'ts. But the Bible is so much more than that. It is a love letter from our Creator, a guide for life, a source of comfort and encouragement, and a tool for transformation. When we approach the Bible with this understanding, we begin to see it not as a burden, but as a blessing.

Secondly, we need to make reading the Bible a priority. In our busy lives, it's easy to push Bible reading to the side. But just as we need food to nourish our bodies, we need the Word of God to nourish our souls. We need to set aside time each day to read the Bible, to meditate on its truths, and to apply them in our lives.

Next, it’s essential that we read the Bible with understanding. It's not enough to simply read the words on the page. We need to understand what they mean and how they apply to us. This requires us to study the Bible, to ask questions, to seek answers, and to pray for wisdom and understanding. It's also helpful to use resources like Bible commentaries and study guides to help us understand the context and meaning of the passages we read.

Finally, we need to live out what we read. The Bible is not just a book to be read, but a book to be lived. As James 1:22 says, "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says." When we read the Bible, we should ask ourselves, "How does this apply to my life? How can I live this out today?" The Bible is not just about information, but transformation. It's not just about knowing, but doing.

In Nehemiah we see a people who were hungry for the Word of God. They didn't just want to hear it, they wanted to understand and live it out. And when they did, they experienced great joy that came from knowing God. This is the joy that we can experience when we battle biblical illiteracy in our lives.
