Zechariah 5: 1 – 10
Flying Billboard
1 Then I turned and raised my eyes, and saw there a flying scroll. 2 And he said to me, “What do you see?” So I answered, “I see a flying scroll. Its length is twenty cubits and its width ten cubits.” 3 Then he said to me, “This is the curse that goes out over the face of the whole earth: ‘Every thief shall be expelled,’ according to this side of the scroll; and, ‘Every perjurer shall be expelled,’ according to that side of it.” 4 “ I will send out the curse,” says the LORD of hosts; “ It shall enter the house of the thief and the house of the one who swears falsely by My name. It shall remain in the midst of his house and consume it, with its timber and stones.” 5 Then the angel who talked with me came out and said to me, “Lift your eyes now, and see what this is that goes forth.” 6 So I asked, “What is it?” And he said, “It is a basket that is going forth.” He also said, “This is their resemblance throughout the earth: 7 Here is a lead disc lifted up, and this is a woman sitting inside the basket”; 8 then he said, “This is Wickedness!” And he thrust her down into the basket, and threw the lead cover over its mouth. 9 Then I raised my eyes and looked, and there were two women, coming with the wind in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a stork, and they lifted up the basket between earth and heaven. 10 So I said to the angel who talked with me, “Where are they carrying the basket?” 11 And he said to me, “To build a house for it in the land of Shinar; when it is ready, the basket will be set there on its base.”
Would you agree with me that there are certain books in the bible that we shy away from reading? Off the top of your head, give me the names of a couple of books in which you avoid diving into unless you have to? Well, let’s see if you would match my selection. How about 1 and 2 Chronicles, Job, Leviticus, Lamentations? The books of Chronicles have all these guys begetting other guys. It causes you to speed read or skip over them entirely. I see some teachers skip over these passages without even trying to go over them. Forgive us dear Holy Spirit? You put these Holy Words in for a purpose. You know our hearts and they are deceitfully wicked. We avoid Job because of all the terrible things that happened to him. Leviticus has all these special things of sacrifice that we zip through them without knowing what or why they are listed. The book of Lamentations is so negative with all the sadness we would rather be happy or encouraged or give us some action and adventure stories.
Let me say that all the words of the bible have been placed here for a reason. Mankind messed up everything since the book of Genesis chapter 3. Our Holy God has listed what He has deemed necessary for us. All the words of the Bible are important. This is so important that in the book of Revelation chapter 22 our precious Holy Ghost has said that if anyone adds or detracts from His Holy Word then get ready for yourselves to also receive some subtraction, ‘18 For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.’
Truth is if you are willing to take the time to read and research the books of the bible you will find amazing golden nuggets that enrich your thoughts, minds, hearts, and lives. For example as we begin to take a look at this chapter in the book of Zechariah you realize that with the reestablishment of the high priesthood and of the building of the new Temple it would be necessary to cleanse everything according to our Lord’s Holy Standards. Sin needs to be routed out of the land. The people need to be purified and rededicated to the Holy Adoni Yahweh. What do they need to do to have God Bless them again? Have you ever ask in prayer, ‘Lord what must I do for You to Bless me again?’ If you know these are questions that need to be answered then to a large degree you can already interpret what chapter 5 of Zechariah is saying. But, first things first.- so how do the people do the right things? Perhaps it happened before or is there something somewhere else in Scripture that can answer these questions.
