Flooded Foundations
Contributed by Oris Hubbard on Jan 17, 2001 (message contributor)
Summary: The foundations on which we build our lives are vitally important. Preached following Hurricane Floyd flood in North Carolina.
Introduction:
As I speak, there are over 4000 people in emergency shelters in North Carolina. Most of these, our neighbors, are in these shelters because they have been run from their homes by the flood waters of the Tar, the Neuse, the Trent Rivers and various streams that have turned into massive torrents. Hurricane Floyd and its resulting flood will be the storm that this generation talks about for the rest of their lives.
Helicopter cameras show the rooftops of hundreds of homes west of us. Even in our area of Washington County, basements are flooded and waters have surrounded homes eating away at foundations.
God has called us to do more than pray; He has called us to put works alongside our faith and do something concrete for those who are suffering. James 2:15 “If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, 16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? 17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.”
I. Foundations of Sand
A. Materialism
Psalm 20:7 “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.”
B. Pleasure
2 Timothy 3:1 “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. 2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, 4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; 5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.”
C. Self
D. Family
E. Man’s Reason and Worldly Philosophies
II. Foundations of Stone
A. Jesus Christ and His teachings

C. The Word of God
Isaiah 40:8 “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.”
D. Prayer and Fasting
E. Biblical Worship
John 4:23 “But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.”
F. Discipleship
G. Evangelism
Matt. 28:19 “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
Conclusion:
These foundations cannont be flooded. These make up the foundation of a steady, stable life.
