Emphasize the importance of claiming our belongingness to God, which shapes our connections within the church and helps us understand the difference between merely fitting in and truly belonging.

Introduction

Good morning, church family! Today, we're going to dive into a topic that many of us can relate to, especially in this digital age where it's easy to feel isolated and disconnected from others. I'm talking about the importance of claiming our belongingness to God and how that impacts our connections within the church and our sense of fitting in versus truly belonging. The Scripture we are focusing on today is Romans 12:2, which says:

"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."

As we explore this topic, let's remember this quote C.S. Lewis: "The Christian does not think God will love us because we are good, but that God will make us good because He loves us." God's love for us is the foundation of our belongingness to Him, and it is this love that shapes our connections within the church.

Claiming Our Belongingness to God

This idea of belongingness is rooted in the understanding that we are not merely creations of God, but we are His children, loved and cherished by Him. As we explore this concept, let us consider the various aspects of claiming our belongingness to God.

First, we must understand that claiming our belongingness to God is a choice. It is not something that is automatically bestowed upon us, nor is it something that we can earn through our good works or religious practices. Instead, it is a conscious decision that we make to accept the love and grace that God offers us through His Son, Jesus Christ. When we choose to claim our belongingness to God, we are acknowledging that we are sinners in need of His saving grace and that we are willing to submit our lives to His will and purpose.

Second, claiming our belongingness to God requires a transformation of our identity. As Romans 12:2 states, we are not to conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of our minds. This transformation involves recognizing that our true identity is found in Christ and not in the world's standards or expectations. When we claim our belongingness to God, we are no longer defined by our accomplishments, our failures, our social status, or any other worldly measure. Instead, we find our worth and value in the fact that we are children of God, loved and accepted by Him.

Third, claiming our belongingness to God involves embracing our role within the body of Christ. As believers, we are not meant to live in isolation but to be part of a community of faith that supports, encourages, and challenges one another. When we claim our belongingness to God, we recognize that we have a unique place within the church, with gifts and talents that can be used to serve others and glorify God.

This sense of belonging within the church is not about fitting in or conforming to a particular mold, but rather about finding our purpose and identity in Christ and using our gifts to build up the body of Christ.

Fourth, claiming our belongingness to God has a profound impact on our relationships with others. When we understand that we are loved and accepted by God, it frees us to love and accept others without fear of rejection or judgment. We can extend grace and forgiveness to others because we have experienced it ourselves. This sense of belongingness also helps us to break down barriers and divisions within the church, as we recognize that we are all part of the same family, united by our faith in Christ.

Fifth, claiming our belongingness to God provides us with a sense of security and stability in a world that is often chaotic and uncertain. When we know that we belong to God, we can trust that He is in control and that He has a plan for our lives, even when we don't understand the circumstances we face. This sense of belongingness helps us to navigate the challenges and trials of life with hope and resilience, knowing that we are never alone and that God is always with us.

Sixth, claiming our belongingness to God is essential for our spiritual growth and maturity. As we grow in our understanding of God's love for us and our identity in Christ, we become more like Jesus in our thoughts, attitudes, and actions. This process of sanctification is a lifelong journey, and our sense of belongingness to God is a crucial part of that journey. As we claim our belongingness to God, we are better equipped to resist the temptations and pressures of the world, and we are more likely to live lives that are pleasing to God and a blessing to others.

It is also important to recognize that claiming our belongingness to God is not a one-time event but an ongoing process. Our sense of belongingness to God can be challenged by various factors, such as doubt, fear, sin, or the influence of the world. In these moments, it is essential that we return to the truth of God's Word and remind ourselves of who we are in Christ and the love that God has for us. As we continually claim our belongingness to God, we are better able to stand firm in our faith and persevere through the trials and challenges of life.

And seventh, claiming our belongingness to God has eternal implications. As believers, we have the assurance of eternal life with God, not because of anything we have done, but because of what Jesus has done for us on the cross. This sense of belongingness to God is not just for this life but extends into eternity. When we claim our belongingness to God, we can look forward to an eternity spent in His presence, where we will experience the fullness of His love and joy.
