Plan for: Thanksgiving | Advent | Christmas
The freedom we have in Christ is greater than any earthly freedom, and we are called to stand firm in our faith, resist returning to sin, and serve one another in love.
You know how we celebrate the 4th of July with fireworks, BBQs, and hanging out with friends and family? Well, that's all about celebrating our freedom as a country. But guess what? We have an even more amazing freedom to celebrate - the freedom we have in Jesus!
Our main idea today is this: The freedom we have in Christ is way better than any other freedom we can experience. We're going to dive into Galatians 5:1-15 to see what this freedom is all about.
But first, I want to help us begin thinking about the idea of freedom. I want you to imagine you're trapped in a room with no doors or windows. The only way out is to break through the walls. Now, imagine someone comes along and gives you a sledgehammer. That sledgehammer represents the freedom Jesus gives us to break free from sin and live a life full of love and purpose.
The freedom we have in Christ is way better than any other freedom we can experience.
First up, we need to stand firm in our faith. That means we don't let anything shake us or knock us down. We hold onto Jesus and trust Him no matter what. Just like that sledgehammer in our object lesson, we need to use our freedom in Christ to break through any obstacles that try to hold us back.
Next, we need to make sure we don't go back to our old ways. You know, the stuff we did before we knew Jesus. It's like breaking out of that room and then deciding to go back in and lock the door. That doesn't make any sense, right? So let's not do that with our lives.
Finally, we need to serve one another in love. That means we use our freedom in Christ to help others and show them the love of Jesus. It's like using that sledgehammer to break down walls for other people too, not just ourselves.
Now, let's get practical. What does this look like in your life? How can you stand firm, not go back, and serve others in love? Maybe it's inviting someone new to sit with you at lunch, or helping a friend with their homework, or even just praying for someone who's going through a tough time.
Remember, the freedom we have in Christ is way better than any other freedom we can experience. And let's live that out by standing firm, not going back, and serving one another in love.
Let's pray together: "God, thank you for the amazing freedom we have in Jesus. Help us to stand firm in our faith, not go back to our old ways, and serve others in love. Show us how to live out this freedom every day. Amen."
1. What does it mean to stand firm in your faith? How can you do that in your daily life?
2. Why is it tempting to return to sin even after experiencing freedom in Christ? How can you resist this temptation?
3. How can you serve others in love? Share some practical ways you can show love to your friends, family, and neighbors.
4. How does the freedom in Christ compare to the freedom we celebrate on the 4th of July? In what ways is it different?
