A short devotion to start a meeting, aimed at inspiring each other to stay resilient during life's storms.
Have you ever noticed how it can rain on one side of town and not the other? Or even on one side of the street and not the other? Even tornadoes have a relatively narrow path of destruction. I've seen places where homes on one side of the street were heavily damaged while on the other side they suffered only minor damage.
The word "storm" appears 34 times in the Bible. The first instance is found in Exodus 9, during the seventh plague on Egypt. Moses lifted his staff toward the sky, and thunder, hail, and lightning struck the earth. It was a storm unlike any Egypt had ever experienced.
The great psalmist David also knew what it was like to be in the storms of life. In Psalm 57:1, he cries out to God for mercy and seeks refuge under His protective wings until the violent storm passes.
Mosie Lister, a hymn writer, penned the famous song "Till The Storm Passes By." This song resonates with many because it captures the essence of finding shelter in God during life's storms.
Isaiah 25:4 - "You have been a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in their distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat. For the breath of the ruthless is like a storm driving against a wall."
Matthew 8:23-27 - Jesus and His disciples are caught in a storm while crossing the Sea of Galilee. Jesus calms the storm with His words.
Acts 27:13-20 - Paul recounts a severe storm they encountered during their journey, which lasted for many days and caused them to lose hope.
1. Storms are an inevitable part of life.
- We are either coming out of a storm, currently in a storm, or heading towards a storm.
- Storms can take various forms, such as physical, emotional, or spiritual challenges.
2. How do we navigate through life's storms?
- Find our refuge in God.
- Put on the "spiritual robe" of God's unconditional love and let it guide our actions.
- Stand on the Word of God and let it speak through us.
- Develop a plan or strategy to stay grounded in faith, such as regular prayer and Bible study.
3. The importance of finding shelter in the midst of storms.
- God is our ultimate refuge and shelter.
- He provides protection and comfort during life's trials.
- Trusting in God's love and guidance helps us weather the storms with hope and strength.
In conclusion, storms are an inevitable part of life. However, we can find shelter and refuge in God. Just as Moses, David, Jesus, and Paul experienced storms, we too will face challenges. But by putting on the "spiritual robe" of God's love, standing on His Word, and seeking His refuge, we can navigate through life's storms with hope and strength. Let us remember the words of the hymn, "Till the Storm Passes By," and trust in God to keep us safe until the storm passes. Amen.
