God used Peninnah's provocation of Hannah to push her towards her victory

Introduction

The story of Elkanah and his family, as depicted in the book of 1 Samuel, reveals significant lessons for us. Elkanah had two wives, Peninnah and Hannah. Peninnah had children, while Hannah desperately longed for a child. Despite facing provocation from Peninnah, Hannah's faith and favor with God ultimately led her to victory.

Lesson Number 1: Emotions and Focus

It is natural to experience emotions, but we must not allow them to consume us. Elkanah's family was devout and regularly worshipped God at the annual feasts in Shiloh. Despite the distance and the presence of the corrupt sons of Eli as priests, they remained committed to seeking God's face. We should learn from their zeal and determination to pursue God, even in the face of adversity. Our trust should be in God, not in the love or approval of others.

Lesson Number 2: Closed Womb vs. Barrenness

Hannah's closed womb was not a sign of barrenness but a deliberate act of God. It was a temporary condition designed to display God's glory in her life. We should not view delays in our lives as permanent setbacks but as opportunities for God to demonstrate His power and faithfulness.

Lesson Number 3: The Purpose of Provocation

Peninnah's provocation towards Hannah was part of God's plan. Although Peninnah saw herself as superior due to her children, she was merely a tool in God's hands. We should not be discouraged by those who seem to be ahead of us. Instead, we should trust that God is using them to propel us towards our destiny.

Lesson Number 4: Responding to Provocation

Hannah's response to Peninnah's provocation was exemplary. She did not engage in arguments or exchange words with her rival. Instead, she turned to God in prayer. We should learn to ignore provocation and focus on seeking God's guidance and strength. By doing so, we can maintain our peace and avoid distractions from our purpose.

Lesson Number 5: The Purpose of a Closed Womb

Hannah's closed womb served a specific purpose and season in God's plan. It prepared her for the birth of Samuel, a significant figure in Israel's history. Samuel became a great prophet, judge, and priest who brought about change and order in the nation. We should trust that God's timing is perfect and that our delays are part of His greater plan for our lives.

Conclusion

Hannah's perseverance in prayer led to the opening of her womb and the birth of Samuel. She outlasted her adversary, Peninnah, and left a lasting legacy. We should trust that God is working behind the scenes, using both favorable and challenging circumstances to fulfill His purposes in our lives. As we remain faithful and focused on Him, He will bring about breakthroughs and blessings beyond our expectations.
