Finding Direction In Life
Contributed by Steve Pearman on Jan 13, 2025 (message contributor)
Summary: So many are wondering, "What is my purpose?". This message allows people to think through that question
Introduction
We’ve all asked the question at some point: *What is my purpose?* Life often feels like a winding road with twists, turns, and uncertainties. Sometimes we wonder, "Am I on the right path?" This morning, we’ll explore how to find direction in life through faith in God.
1. Trust in the Lord with All Your Heart
The Foundation of Direction
The verse begins with an instruction: *Trust in the Lord with all your heart.*
- Trusting God means letting go of our tendency to control every aspect of our lives.
- Often, we only trust God when it feels convenient. True trust involves surrender, even when the path ahead seems unclear.
Biblical Example: Abraham
Abraham was called to leave his home and go to an unknown land (Genesis 12:1). He didn’t have the full map, just a promise. Yet he trusted God wholeheartedly.
Application:
- What is God asking you to trust Him with today?
- Are there areas where you're holding back?
2. Lean Not on Your Own Understanding
The Danger of Self-Reliance
Our understanding is limited, shaped by emotions, biases, and short-term thinking. God, however, sees the whole picture.
- Proverbs 14:12 reminds us: "There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end, it leads to death."
- Relying solely on human wisdom can lead to missteps and regrets.
Biblical Example: Peter Walking on Water
In Matthew 14, Peter stepped out of the boat, walking toward Jesus. When he focused on Jesus, he stayed afloat. But the moment he relied on his understanding of the storm, he began to sink.
Application:
- What storms are causing you to lean on your understanding rather than God’s promises?
- Shift your focus back to Christ.
3. In All Your Ways Submit to Him
Surrender and Obedience
Submission is about aligning our desires with God’s will. It’s saying, "Lord, not my will, but Yours be done."
- Psalm 37:5 encourages us: "Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him and He will do this."
Biblical Example: Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane
Jesus prayed, "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." (Luke 22:42).
- Even in the face of the cross, Jesus submitted to the Father’s will, knowing it was the path to ultimate victory.
Application:
- Are there areas in your life where you’re resisting God’s guidance?
- Pray for the courage to submit, even when the path seems hard.

4. He Will Make Your Paths Straight
The Promise of Direction
When we trust, lean not on ourselves, and submit to God, He promises to direct our paths.
- This doesn’t mean the road will be easy or without challenges, but it will be purposeful.
Biblical Example: The Israelites in the Wilderness
God led His people through the wilderness with a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night. The journey was long and difficult, but He never abandoned them.
Application:
- Look back on your life. Where has God guided you in ways you didn’t initially understand?
- Trust that He is working for your good (Romans 8:28).

Practical Steps for Finding Direction
1. Seek God in Prayer: Make it a daily habit to ask for His guidance.
2. Immerse Yourself in Scripture: God’s Word is a lamp to our feet (Psalm 119:105).
3. Listen for the Holy Spirit: Be sensitive to His promptings.
4. Seek Wise Counsel: Proverbs 15:22 says, "Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers, they succeed."
5. Be Patient: God’s timing is perfect. Don’t rush the process.

Conclusion
Finding direction in life begins with trusting God, releasing our need for control, and submitting to His guidance. When we align our hearts with His will, He promises to lead us on a path that brings purpose, peace, and fulfilment.
Challenge for the Week:
Spend time each day reflecting on Proverbs 3:5-6. Ask God to show you where you need to trust Him more, lean less on yourself, and submit fully to His guidance.
Let us pray.
