This sermon aims to teach us how to handle fear and anxiety by placing them in God's hands, responding to challenges with faith, and finding strength in scripture.
Welcome! Today we begin our second week in our four week series titled Fear Not. Last week we talked about healthy and unhealthy fear and the importance of recognizing the difference so that we can respond appropriately.
We learned that God, “...did not give us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.” Today we’re going to be hearing again from the Apostle Paul as we go a step further in learning how to respond appropriately to unhealthy fear.
For many of us fear and anxiety are ever-ready responses to the troubles of this life. It’s so deeply ingrained in our thinking that you could say fear has become a habit for most of us. The good news is that like any other habit, you can develop new ones in place of the old.
At the end of his letter to the Philippian church the Apostle Paul gives numerous exhortations, there are 2 verses in particular that are important today; “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7
The secret that Paul learned about fear, anxiety, and worry is that they belong in the hands of God - not yours.
