Summary: A lesson for fathers from God through Abraham and Isaac.
Father’s Day 2002
Genesis 22:1-14
Comparison between how Abraham followed God’s instructions and the way we should follow God’s instruction, with regards to our own children, can be drawn.
I. God Spoke
a. Abraham (Vs 1-2)
b. To the Fathers
i. 1 Tim. 5:8 “But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.” Physically, emotionally, Spiritually
ii. Ephes. 6:4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
iii. Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
iv. Given you the church to help you know what is in the Bible
II. The Preparation (vs 3-5)
a. Abraham did not understand why
-sometimes parents may not fully undestand why God has said somethings are wrong
b. Began Early
i. Did not wait or put it off
c. Split the wood, sharpened the knife
d. Went
i. obeyed
e. 3 day journey
i. not a short path
f. Told Young men to stay
i. Took Responsibility for what he had to do and did not ask others to do his job
g. Worship
i. Instruction is worship
h. Wood on Sons back
i. Burden on the son (teach responsibility)
III. Children ask Why? (vs 7-8)
a. Because God said so
IV. Point of trust(Vs 9-11)
a. Built an alter
i. Alter in home?
b. Laid the wood in order
i. Discipline
c. Bound Isaac
i. Why? He would rebel
ii. There is a difference in finding themselves and rebellion
d. Submitted him to God’s will
e. Complete obedience
V. God Provided a way for the Father to give life to his son
a. Physically
b. Spiritually
VI. God provided blessings for both the father and the son
a. Proverbs 23:24 “The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.”
b. Jehovahjireh: The Lord Provides
i. In the place of obedience
ii. In the place he calls you to
iii. In the circumstances he puts you in
c. He provides for those who put their faith and trust and love in him
Conclusion:
Romans 8:32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
