Plan for: Thanksgiving | Advent | Christmas
Jesus demonstrates God's self-giving love and forgiveness by praying for those who mock and crucify him, embodying his own teachings from the Sermon on the Mount.
Today, we're going to talk about something super important - forgiveness. You know, that thing we all need but sometimes find hard to give. We're going to look at a story from the Bible where Jesus shows us the ultimate example of forgiveness. So, let's dive in!
Our main story comes from Luke 23:33-43. It's about Jesus being crucified and how He forgave the people who were hurting Him. Now, I want to start with a little object lesson to help us understand forgiveness better.
We're going to look at a story from the Bible where Jesus shows us the ultimate example of forgiveness.
As we go through the story, we'll see that there were three groups of people who mocked Jesus while He was on the cross: the religious leaders, the Roman soldiers, and a criminal. Each time someone hurt Jesus, it was like adding a drop of food coloring to the water.
Even though Jesus was in so much pain, He still forgave them. It's like He had this super powerful bleach that could make the water clear again. That's what His forgiveness does for us - it cleanses us from all the hurt and pain.
1. Jesus endured the pain and humiliation of crucifixion, but He still forgave those who hurt Him. That's pretty amazing, right? Even when we're going through tough times, we can remember that Jesus understands our pain and can help us forgive others.
2. Jesus practiced what He preached. He taught us to turn the other cheek and love our enemies, and that's exactly what He did on the cross. He forgave the people who were mocking Him and showed us that we can do the same.
3. If we want to live in God's kingdom, we need to make Jesus our king. Just like the criminal who asked Jesus to remember him, we can ask Jesus to be our king and forgive us too.
So, what does this mean for us? Well, we all have people in our lives who hurt us or make us angry. But instead of holding onto that pain, we can choose to forgive them, just like Jesus did. It might not be easy, but with Jesus' help, we can do it.
"Lord, thank you for showing us the ultimate example of forgiveness. Help us to forgive others, just like you forgave those who hurt you. Give us the strength to love our enemies and turn the other cheek. In Jesus' name, Amen."
1. How does Jesus' response to his mockers and crucifiers demonstrate God's self-giving love and forgiveness?
2. In what ways can we practice forgiveness in our own lives, following Jesus' example?
3. How does understanding God's self-giving love and forgiveness change our perspective on the Sermon on the Mount?
4. Share a personal experience where you struggled to forgive someone. How did you eventually find the strength to forgive?
5. How can we support and encourage each other in our journey of forgiveness and living out God's self-giving love?
